Well the call came in from him around 2230 EDT.  He sounded almost as if he was reading from a script.  Probably just nerves.  It was great to hear his voice and tell him I love him.  He says I should be getting another call in about 3 weeks.

Hello there. I am told they do read from a script.  My call was exactly the same way. It was 2 minutes long and very generic. He said I'm here, I'm ok. I should be getting a box in a week or so and he will call me in 3 weeks. It's been two months since my son arrive at Great Lakes.  I get to see him next Friday for graduation.  This is a great site to be on.  It has helped me so much and I"ve made some really great friends. It does get easier.  I can say that now :) Take care

My newphew left for basic on 3/29,  His parents are divorced and my brother told his son to call his mother instead of him.  The sad part is that my brothers exwife won't contact my brother to let him that his son arrived safely.    So the only communication that my brother will have with his son is mail and maybe (a big one at that) a phone call.

linnygal, tell your brother to get on this site as well as he can join the PIR group and learn a lot of what is going on as well.  It is too bad your ex-sister-in-law will not alert your brother.  I got the call and immediately sent a text and e-mail to my ex.  I also copied and faxed the first letter with their address and graduation date (PIR).  There is also a FB page that he can ask any questions.  I learn a lot more than my son told me on this site and from the other moms in my divisions group.  Your brother can also contact his son's recruiter and they can look up the address and give it to him so he can write to him immediately.

Just keep those letters going to your nephew.  Include news/sport articles from the paper, family pictures, drawings from young kids, jokes and anything else that will make him smile. It is best to keep the envelope white and simple.  Make sure no care packages go to him or he will pay for it and so will his division.  It does go fast once you get those weekly letters.  Good luck to your SE.
