It's been awhile since I've logged on.  Much has happened since then, including the long illness and subsequent loss of my father in June.  My son went on to A-school, and then C-school for preventative medicine, both in San Antonio.  Now he's in Hawaii at Pearl Harbor, and a mother couldn't be more happy for her boy!

However, now I'm facing a Christmas utterly alone.  With dad gone, Dylan so far away, and no family to speak of nearby, the solitude really hit me today.  I've lost so much in the past couple years, and today is when it all came crashing in.  I'm just reaching out for some support during this challenging holiday season.

Also, if anyone has a sailor in Hawaii, could you tell me what non-perishable food items I should ship in a holiday care package?  My son says that Oreos are outrageous there, so I'm sending him a few packages of them, but are there any other suggestions?  Any assistance will be appreciated.

(((((CarolW))))) That's a cyber hug from one Navy Mom to another.  My sincerest condolences on the loss of your father.

It's funny how our kids want Oreos.  I have sent many care packages to both of mine with Oreos.  Send anything your Sailor loves.  Even if it is something he can get, he will love getting it from you.

There are 5-6 Costcos in Hawaii. Each one has wonderful selection of prepared food, along with all the typical stuff. The best thing to do if you have a membership at Costco is to add his name and get him a card ($50 per year). We were there in July for my son's wedding. For an information gathering, we purchased chicken salad, greek salad, Hawaiian bread, chips, salsa, wine, beer, soda, water, fresh fruit, chicken wings and tri-tip for BBQing. It was all wonderful. He'll be able to buy Oreos and more at Costco.

That is an excellent idea! The card can be part of his care package. I heard that Cosco prices in Hawaii are comparable to the mainland. Is this what you found when you visited?

Thank you so much...it really helps to know that others are willing to reach out.

Prices are the same. They may be higher but I didn't noticed. There are Panda Expresses too.  But one or two main courses, then add more rice at home or more stir fry vegetables. We did the Costco thing for our impromptu party (for 45) because eating at restaurants can catering is very, very expensive. Everything worked out just great. We spent $600 including all the alcohol.  We had lots of tri tip left - so plenty to nibble on the next two days for lunch. It would be great if he and his roommates sort of plan out their menus for the week - so they can get stuff all at one time. Each one contributing to "main courses" with each person budgeting for his own snack items.

That is excellent advice, BunkerQB...thank you!  I will share your suggestions with him.  I already texted him about the Costcos nearby, and he's going to check them out.  Thanks for all your help :)

When we visit Big Island, we always gas up our rental car at Costco.  And yes, we get a place with a kitchen so we can buy Costco food to feed ourselves meals such as breakfast.  Saves a ton of money.  He should get a Safeway card too, they aren't as cheap, but their specials can be really good when he just needs a few things.
