My Daughter is Thinking About Joining

Hello Everyone! This is my first time here so let me know if I don't do things right. First of, let me just say thank God I found this website!!! I have read through some of the blogs and was really impressed with all the comments, reason why I registered. Anyway, I have a daughter who is 20 and is currently thinking about joining as a Corpsman. She wants to be a Registered Nurse. I was a Navy wife many years ago so I know a little about the life, however, I was wondering if anyone has any advise for my daughter. I was a little surprised that she chose the Navy but I was proud of her because her Granpa (who she was very close to) was a Navy WWII and Korean War veteran and I know he would have been pleased. Anyway, she has seen the recruiter and she is scheduled to take the ASVAB test next week. My thoughts are she is making the right decision given the fact that right now she is at a dead end job, but I would like to hear your thoughts and advise. I would appreciate any comments (good or bad). Thanks for the help.

Thank you so much for your help. She's still trying to decide. It's been difficult because she doesn't know what to expect. I told her to check this website out because so many like yourself, are willing to share their stories, comments, etc.. Again, thank you for your help and please tell your son thank you for serving our country.

Hey Tankswife, my son called me today and said "mom.... I'm a sailor". He wanted to join the navy and told me this when he was still in high school. He went to the recruter's office and weighed in at 300 lbs. He wanted it bad. When i talked to him today he sounded awsome. He's 200lbs and less than 18% body fat. He had 2 granddads in the navy, my step-dad has passed but my real dad is about to brust with pride. I called my dad after matt called me and he and my step-mom were so happy. my son is 19 yrs old and i could tell by his voice today that he is SO happy, he told me in 1of his letters (when he was way down in the dumps) " I don't know if i was really ready for this mom but today he said this was the best thing i could have ever done! Matt is MY only birth child and i could'nt be more proud of him. I will always support him and all the service men and women who do this for us. I wish you and your daughter the best. Let us know....we will be right here for both of you.

Thank you all for your comments. She has viewed some of the postings here and I think she is leaning towards enlisting. Debbie in MD - thanks for the suggestion about the recruiter arranging a meeting with active duty service person. My daughter is out of town due to a training conference however,I will bring that to her attention. I think it will be a shock being away from me (we are very close) but like "dubbie" said I think she will realize at the end that she made the right decision. Again, thank you all. It is great to know that so many people are out there willing to help a stranger.
