My son joined about a month ago. He has had a wonderful recruiter that has guided him every step of the way and so far been very honest with us on what is what. He is scheduled to leave for boot camp Sept 18, 2012. He is going into the military police, he wants to work with the K-9 division and possibly move on to the SEALS. He is not excited, nervous or anything yet. Just taking it a day at a time. I think I must be nervous enough for both of us. The only concern I have is that he really wants to go to college too. He has applied for the NROTC scholarship and they told him if he gets it they will delay him until after college. But, everything is still in the air because he couldn't apply for the scholarship until April1. He has been accepted to The Citadel in Charleston SC, we go to Pre-Knob this week in fact. So at this point I am carrying on as if he will go to college, but at the same time preparing myslef for the possiility he will leave in Sept instead.

My feelings are that I am so proud he made this decision, worried that he won't make it, and sad because I am going to miss him so much. He is my oldest of two boys, and now my youngest wants to do the same and join the Navy as soon as he can! :) Can you say floored???

I am glad to have found this site and I am so glad it tells me so much more of what hasen't been said yet. :) Thanks to all the mom's and family members that are on here everyday.

I hope to make some friends on here that are going through the same things I am. :)

Sometimes I find myself worrying that he won't make it through boot camp. (He can be very lazy sometimes) He also has a really bad temper at times and I worry about him taking orders... sometimes that doesnt go over well with him. At times I think maybe boot camp before college would be good then at others times I think I really want him to stay with me just a little longer and college is closer and I can see him more. Which ever way it ends up I know.... no I hope that he does well with it.

Thanks to all for letting me ramble. :)

Trying for SEAL after going into another rating first would mean at least a year, probably more like two years or longer, at that rating, in his case Master at Arms (MA), before he would be able to request BUD/s using a special request chit and complete his time at his command at the time. He would have to put in his regular day and then do the extra training he would need to get/stay in shape to meet the advanced requirements and get high scores on his Physical Standards Test (PST).

It sounds like your son needs to see what happens with the scholarship if that is what he wants to do. He needs to decide what he really wants and go for that.  As far as his recruiter being honest, some are, but it appears that more aren't, so don't believe anything unless your future Sailor has it in writing.  As far as him making it through BC, that will all be up to him; being a Saiilor is all about teamwork and following orders.

Also, the MWD (Military Working Dog) program requires an additional C School and few get to go to that straight out of A School, although it does happen sometimes.  It would depend on if there was a billet coming up for MWD and if the Sailor was exceptional in A School and showed a particular aptitude for it.  Many who get into that do it by volunteering at the kennel on their own time.

My MA mostly loves what he does and will soon be reenlisting for another 4 years.

Well found out today that if he applies for the NROTC scholarship now he won't be able to do what he wanted... they are doiing the scholarship for the 2013 fall semester. WE were told he could apply now for the 2012 fall year... i am not happy and my hubby is furious....

J now has to make a major decision to go forward to bc and try for sta-21 later or to drop out and try for the NROTC scholarship and go to college.... we talked to a new guy that is comming in our office and he is the one that really changed everything up today.. I started asking questions and he is like wellllllll...

Just bummed because now J has to make a decision really fast. :( Thanks to all who commented. Your the reason I started asking questions.
