OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Profile Questions Changed - Please Update!

Hello N4M Members!

In order to get a better idea of who our members are and to help you find other members using the Advanced Search feature, we have made some adjustments to our member Profile Questions.

You’ll notice that some questions were removed and some were added. We’ve also made a few questions required and private. This is in reaction to some privacy concerns that were expressed and also to help us understand who is joining so we can improve the way the site works and what content we feature. We’ll be sharing our findings with all of you soon!

If you haven’t already, please go back and update your profile so you can participate! Also, if you have not entered your date of birth already, please make sure you update that as well. Some of the questions have privacy options so you can control what information shows up on your page. Just click on “Settings” and you’ll see all of the questions listed. Questions with the lock symbol next to them will be viewable only to you and I - members that visit your page will not be able to see your responses. We are working to have privacy options available for your answer to the Location question.

Remember that you can always set your profile to Private as well. Learn how here.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation and I look forward to sharing what we find!

Elle

Thank you Elle! That was easier than I thought it would be.

Barbara - The locked questions are only appearing for you. I can see them as admin, but no other members can view them on your profile. I just checked.

Race/Ethncity is optional. You do not have to answer it if you don't feel comfortable or if you feel it is not relevant. This isn't information we are looking to obtain on an individual level - we're just trying to get a feel for the demographics of the site.

I apologize for not sending you a warning earlier to save your information. I do still have all the old info on file so I can PM you content that was deleted if you would like to add it into your About Me section.

Zip Code is not something we control - it is the updated way that Ning has set up the site to collect information about Location. I am working with them on privacy controls for this question.

The "locked" questions will show up on your page when you visit it. However - nobody else can see them. If you log off your account and visit your page without being signed in they will not appear. I double checked!

Elle,
First off Ning, has gotten me fixed! YEAH!!!! Makes me really happy!
Secondly, after reading some of the posts on here, and seeing OPSEC mentioned, I thought that I would take the time to mention something. For those that have counters/countdowns on their pages, this would be a viloation of OPSEC. Just b/c we don't have our sailors last names on here, doesn't mean that they don't read our post, and can find out what ship/command your sailor is at. Then to have the count down on there, just gives them the opportunity for a plan of attack. I am not saying any of this to scare anyone, we live in post 9/11 and we ALL have to take different percautions. This is an old saying, but rings true for today as it did back then "LOOSE LIPS, SINK SHIPS" We don't have times, dates, count downs, port visits on open forums.
OPSEC is a very hard part of being a military family, thats hard for us here at home to understand. I have a wonderful word document on this. Just my two cents on this.
As for the race question, its just that a questions! I think that in this day in age we are all to worried about being PC, then being who we are! Just my opinion :D

Elle,
Just one comment I wanted to make on the new profile. The only option for child/stepchild is singular. What if you have two sailors - there is no way to honor that there are more than one.

Yes, Thank You here too Elle for all your hard work and having so much patience. :-)

I do agree with you Angie about knowing how to address comments personally when greeting new moms and directing them to specific groups.

Love the Birthday Banner too!!

I've recently stopped some of the email notices coming into my Inbox and rechecked my settings and nothing wrong there. But why are they refilling my Inbox again?? Is it because of the changes going on here??
Comment by Rebecca on March 11, 2009 at 1:19pm
Rose,
First go to your setting and look under email and make sure everything is check for you to receive emails. If everything is checked, you will then need to have Elle give you the link for NING to fix you up!

Dear Elle,
I like the idea of replacing the child with son or daughter. But again, I have one of each so I would not want to just select one.
