Hi.  My son is going to boot camp on 2/25/13.  I had a few questions, some dumb, some not so dumb.  First, after boot camp, they are moved to different barracks for the duration of their A school training, correct?  During boot camp lights out at 10 p.m. and lights on at 3:30 a.m.??  But after the 8 weeks of grueling work, they won't have to have that same schedule of getting up at 3:30 a.m., correct?  My son is studying to be a hull technician.  So after his schooling he will be assigned to a ship.  Can my son have a cell phone once he is finished with boot camp?  Do they have leave time so they can leave the base during their A schooling?  What is a "form" letter?  I know I have more questions but if I could just have one person answer these questions, it will help me a lot.  Thanks.  Mary Ann

You may wish to join the group, DEP-Leavin' for Boot Camp in February You will meet others with loved ones leaving that day/week who may be in the same TG and have PIR together. I also suggest you join New Members Stop Here and check out the Pages and Discussions there.

Be sure to check out Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future Sailor Leaves for....

Your future Sailor may want to join http://www.navydep.com to learn the ins and outs from the DEP point of view. Craig runs that and will steer you to some good links on there.

I see from your page that you have joined the group, Mom's of Hull Technicians, and you mention that your future Sailor will be a Hull Technician; it is actually Hull Maintenance Technician (HT).  His "A" School will be in Great Lakes, IL, but it will be at the Training Support Center (TSC) across the street from the RTC.  Yes, they are in barracks at the TSC as well, but there are not as many Sailors in a room as there were at the RTC.

Yes, lights are out (except a red light) at 10 pm (2200), but reveille is not 3:30 am (0330).  Reveille is as early as 4:00 am during P-days, but during actual training, reveille may be at 5:00 am or 6:00 am (0500-0600) depending on what is going on for the division. (See http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/staff/rdc_typical_day.asp.  That tells what happens for the RDC, but you can see in there what happens for the recruits as well.)

Once he has checked in at the TSC, then he can have his cell phone.

He will have Liberty during "A" School, but he will not have Leave until he graduates "A" School.  He will have off base Liberty during PIR weekend, daytime only, but he must go through the Phases to have off base Liberty.  (See https://www.facebook.com/TrainingSupportCenterGreatLake and check out the Notes.)

The form letter is the letter that your recruit will send to you once P-days are over and he has been assigned to a division at the RTC.  It will give you his address, his PIR (graduation) date, and will tell you the names of the 4 people he plans to put on the Access List to be admitted to his PIR.  (See http://www.navyformoms.com/group/newmomsstophere/page/5-what-your-o....)

On your personal page, a welcoming message has been posted with a link to this

Survival Guide for NavyForMoms Newbies

You'll find a summary of steps to take, links to groups, suggestions for navigating this site and more. Lemonelephant has provided many other useful suggestions. It's great that you are starting your research now. Since your son is not going to boot camp until next Feb, you have some time to get use to the idea. Your son should be involved in this process - ask his recruiter - he too should be a source of information.

It may not be possible for just one person to answer all your questions. The people who are here helping out are all just volunteers (moms/wives/dads/girlriends,etc.) with loved ones in the Navy.  We do what we can.

Good luck.

thank you for all of your comments.  They are very helpful.  I am glad I won't have to go it alone - that I can get support from my Navy Mom buddies.  Where can I find a list of what all the abbreviations are?  Thanks again for your help.

New Members Stop Here

Join this group. Click on link and click +JOIN. On the right side, just underneath the member icons you'll find a number of reference pages. One of them will contain the abbreviations (Acronyms). All sorts of things on the reference pages. One note of caution - you should not get ahead of yourself. Concentrate on getting your son and your self prepared for bootcamp and getting your son and yourself through bootcamp. A lot can happen between now and February. Just enjoy this time with your son and make lots of memories for your scrap book.
