What clothing is and isn't acceptable for PIR?

I was just wondering what clothing is and is not acceptable to wear at PIR. I specifically am asking about T-shirts. Is there anything that is totally a no-no? My husband and I have matching T-shirts that say NAVY(we are not in military) on them and wondered if they were acceptable to wear for PIR. Can anyone help? Thanks!

You cant wear anything against the U.S. or vulgur, a lot of parents wore Navy shirts, I thought it was great, and shows your support. The ceremony is over before you know it. You cant take pictures outside on the base for security reasons, pictures will be taken with your recruit, especially if they get an award. So just think of how you want the picture to come out.

macslair, Whits Mom's Sailor will most likely be in dress whites for her PIR because the RTC typically changes over to dress whites the first full week of May and then back to dress blues the first full week of October. Her SR arrived at the RTC on March 20.

My son left for bootcamp March 9, 2011 and his PIR was May 6, 2011. His PIR was the 1st one of the year that they graduated in their white. Wear what's comfortable, especially on your feet. You will be possibly climbing/sitting in bleachers!!

You will be in awe and so proud of your daughter AND of being an American!! Have fun!!

You really don't want to send her mail in a priority mail envelope.  For one thing, they could decide it counts as a package and not give it to her right away (instead, locking it up and giving it to her when she graduates, or returning it to sender).  You don't want her mail to "stand out" in any way really on the outside, for her sake.  (Trust me on this, having been through Navy boot camp myself, and having both my husband and my son currently in the Navy...)

As far as what to wear to the PIR, as the others have said, you will see a wide range of outfits, but something to keep in mind, one thing the Navy tells spouses when they take Spouse orientation classes and stuff is that generally, you should "dress to the uniform".  What they will be wearing is sort of like a very formal, dressy suit, because it is a formal military ceremony.  They won't turn you away or anything, and there will be lots there in jeans and stuff, but Navy protocol would say go a bit more dressy.  You could always change into the shirts really fast afterwards, as you head out with your Sailor for their liberty :-)
