My question is when our sailors put in for leave to come home do they get any kind of military discount or do they have to pay the full price of the plane ticket. Some of of sailors are halfway around the world and it does cost a pretty penny if you know what I mean. Also are they able to catch a military flight on those big cargo planes. Hope someone can answer this question. Thanks again.

They pay for the ticket out of their own pocket unless they're on orders. Military discounts on flights aren't always that great, but most bases work with local travel agents to help them find the best deals.

Hopping on the cargo planes is called Space A travel. It is uncertain and time consuming, usually not an attractive option to a sailor with limited leave days. I've done it and only recommend it to retirees with all the time in the world to waste. Some sailors may have access to good space A flights, but it isn't normal.

you might check military.com. I havent found any airline that will give the military any discount. Southwest airlines is the cheapest I could find and they have some good deals. I searched the internet for hours and Southwest was the best I could find.

You need to watch for sales with the airlines Gloria, there is no military discount but sometimes if you ask the airlines they will try to find the best rate they can for you. Need to be careful about using the military planes for leave (the name is escaping me at the moment) these are space available and a sailor can really get stuck in a location waiting for a seat. They will either burn thru valuable leave time or be late returning to their command.

We did one coming back from Japan many years ago and 24 hours later...we were right back where the flight originated from. On the flipside...we did make a surprise visit to Midway Island, it was breath taking and historic, so make sure your sailor has lots of time to burn if he goes this way :-)

Sometimes they can catch a military flight... but those can be changed or canceled and sailors need to allow time for that to happen.

Most airlines offer military discounts for active duty personel... you need to call and talk to a person at the airlines. Then the sailor will have to show their orders and id to check in. I have had great luck with Alaska Airlines. Their discounts have been the best when I have needed to book flights.
