DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Can anyone share their experience as far as when they received their military benefits ?

I understand a recruit must be in boot camp for 30 days to receive pay. But there are certain cases, where this can be delayed.

For the most part, though, have you all received your spouse's pay within the 30 day time-frame ?

my understanding is that it takes a bit longer than that - pay is twice a month and so typically a recruit will get the first pay on the third pay cycle after they arrive

but I'm a Navymum not a Navywife so hopefully someone else will be along soon with more experience

You are eligible for health care right away.  Once you get your military ID, that is your Tricare insurance card. if you have a medical emergency before that, use his SSN.

Pay shows up around week three. Paydays are the business day before the first and the fifteenth.  The first check is small because they pay for toiletries, shoes, and sundry items.  They are paid from day one, you just won't see it a chunk of it immediately.  The housing allowance, BAH, should arrive in the second or third paycheck, and will be backdated to the day they shipped out.  It will be a nice lump sum.  After that, BAH is paid half in each check.

Family Separation pay begins after 30 days, $250 a month, with a pro-rated daily rate for periods less than a month.

Thank you for the info on getting health care right away. And using his SSN in case I don't have my military id. Are you saying that the moment he ships out, I am eligible? Along with our 2 kids?

I hope you don't mind, I have a few questions. So sorry!

Do you know if we are eligible for Family Separation Pay while hubby is at boot camp? Or is this just for deployment?

And do you happen to know though, because we are in Guam, we don't get BAH. We get OHA. Basically, if our housing benefits are $2500 but yet, we are only renting for $600. We don't pocket the extra. The military will ONLY pay our rent/lease amount. How will they back pay us, let's say for example, my husband leaves for boot camp at the end of March. And I pay our rent in April. Will the military back pay us for April if we get our benefits in May? And because we are OHA, will they even do so? SORRY if I am confusing you!

He does have to get you enrolled in DEERS before you are Tricare eligible, but they do that in the first few days.  You can call Tricare to check.  

Family Separation does count for boot camp, and for some A schools.  

I understand how OHA works, I was in Yokosuka a long time.  I don't know how it works with boot camp though.  I am still fairly certain they will give you back OHA, and it will be in conjunction with the current month.  When you pay your rent doesn't matter to them.  I am also pretty sure you get the full amount, and can keep the excess.

I will keep that in mind regarding Tricare. I know hubby's recruiter told him, "once you pass TSA (airport security), your status becomes "active" with the military & you officially are under military care" :) Good stuff !

I'm happy to know that we can get Family Separation pay! :) Definitely looking forward to all the help we will be getting.

How was your time in Yokosuka? I believe that is where my friend is stationed with her family! Thanks for the OHA feedback. So with the OHA, if we start to get our benefits by May 15, our OHA will be for the month of May ? And not at least from end of March / whole month of April ? I hope we could keep the extra OHA. What we've been told is that we don't get to pocket the extra. I guess it's different from BAH?

BAH and OHA are indeed different, and I cannot find anything definitive online about the timing, other than it shows up the 1st and 15th.  I think you get the month you are in, which makes it hard to keep up on the rent.  OHA is also approved differently, but I really don't know how it works with going to boot camp.  You have a very unique situation.  I hope you can provide answers later for others!

Hi there! My son is in BC  right now (left Feb. 14) and i just joined this group an hour ago. I  am glad that i will be able to share with you what i just found out earlier: There's a direct deposit that occurred yesterday on to our joint account (yes; he used his "baby" bank account where my name was in it). That means, it's 30-day after that our future sailor gets their first paycheck.
