My son goes to boot camp 5/8. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way but how do I get over the feeling like my heart is going to be ripped out of my chest??

You don't get over the feeling. You just take one day at a time and be as proud of them as you can be. This is my second go around. My second left for BC on 4/18. My 1st son is finishing up his enlistment this year. I thought it would be a little easier because i sorta know what to expect but it still hurts. But oh momma when you get that "I'm a sailor" call and you hear the pride in your child's voice and you see them March in on PIR day you'll forget a lot of that pain. So hang in there momma.. Cry if you need to. I am here for you. Big navy mom hug. Hooyah.

My son goes to boot camp on 5/8 also.  It's very emotional for me also.  What is your son's job?  I'd like for us to share whatever information we can when they are in boot camp.  :)

I would LOVE that. He will be a seamen apprentice

Aww Momto this is such a hard time. You are just being a mother and all of us who have had a child who go into the service understands your feelings. This is the bittersweet moment when the boy is trying to become a man. As mothers, we are wrenched knowing we have to let them go and fearing for their safety. We have all felt so panicked..so lost trying to hold on..I want to encourage you to hang tightly to this site...the women here are amazing. They will hold you and help you and soon, you will be doing this for the other mothers. Letting go is very hard. Soon, you will find such joy in his strength and accomplishments. we are here for you ...hang on mom, this time too, shall pass. take care

asd098- Well said! I couldn't agree more. It is so very difficult to let go, but it is necessary. I promise you, momto navymat, that things will get better. I know it is so hard right now to think differently. I felt like my heart had been shattered into a million pieces when my son told me he was going into the military. When he left for BC I experienced that pain all over again. It has been a little over a week since he left and as each day goes by I have found that I am coping much better. This site is fabulous and has so much support to offer all of us. We are all here for you and each other.

Hugs to you!

Thank you so much for the encouraging words. <3

Well said, asd098. As I read the posts from moms whose children have just left for BC or are going to, it takes me back to one year ago on April 20th when my son left. I thought my heart would break. I had to keep the door to his room closed until I was ready to face it. Our desire to protect never leaves us as moms -we just have to channel it differently as our boys go out to become men. I have to remind myself to not give advice like I have for 19 years and to respect his decisions that he is making as he makes this transition to manhood. So I am one of those moms that is now helping other moms go through this experience and I am hear to say that things will get better, you will transition to a life where you don't know what your child is doing every day and you will still be the support your child looks for. Hang in there.

Another big thank you! These comments DO help! Believe me, I WILL be going back to look at them after he leaves!

@momtonavymat: the best advice that I received before my son went to BC was "don't start missing him before he's gone". So take this next week with him, make memories, give hugs, educate yourself and him about what to expect. Start a journal, lean on Navy moms on here and fb groups, go to MEPS with him, stay with him for swearing in, know that a piece of your heart will go with you to RTC, but that he will always be your boy and will soon be your Sailor! Big NMHs to you!!!

ok, I dont see it in the code words, lol what is MEPS and NMHS? LOL

MEPS=Military Entrance Processing Station.

oh is that the recruiters office? I can go???!!!
