OK, so my son left on May 1st. He is graduating on June 23. I sent him with his phone so he could call when he arrived. He called from his cell the night he arrived, (actually 1:30 the next morning) and told me he arrived, to be expecting a box in approximately 3 weeks and then a letter shortly after. His phone was then put in the "box" with the rest of his personal effects and mailed back home. The next time I received a call from him was 3 weeks later from a pay phone in WAUKEGAN, IL (be looking for calls from IL) via phone card he purchased at the NEX. I am highly suggesting to send the phone and possibly a phone card in her wallet. Activate it and show her how to use the card before she leaves.
I hope this helps! Good luck to your future Sailor! These are very emotional and exciting times for you both.
@lahrrh92,
I suppose something could have changed in the time he has been up there, but he literally just called me on Saturday from a pay phone.
Only the Army (only some of their boot camp locations) and the Air Force allow the recruits to keep cell phones, which are locked up to be used when permitted. Those at the Navy RTC do NOT keep them.
The recruiter has gotten some things confused. There are no phone banks at In-Processing and so the new recruits must use their own cell phones (or borrow one) to make the "I'm here!" call upon arrival. She will put her cell phone in "the box" soon after arrival along with other things that she cannot keep and chooses to send home. She WILL need a phone card to make any calls from the phone banks, so send one with her. See the info in Things to Do in the Last Month before Your Future Sailor Leaves for... and Phone Cards and Phone Calls.
Feel free to share this info with the recruiter so that he will stop spreading the misinformation.
Thanks so much for this information. I didn't want to seem like I was challenging him especially in front of my daughter. I will let him know. I will feel better approaching him since I've had confirmation of recent experience. I am sending her with a calling card and am glad to have clarity.
Thanks for taking time to write. I'm a bit of a mess right now. She leaves in the morning for MEPS and will be sworn in and leave for boot camp Monday. Do they normally travel with other recruits?
Thanks again for all your help.
lahrrh92, Yes, if there are others who are also shipping out to the RTC, then they will travel together.
