My son told us today, via email, that we can go on a tiger cruise with him. Can anyone explain what that is. He is on a ship now and will be returning early February 2012. Thanks.

A tiger cruise is a short trip, anywhere from about 3 to 5 days, where a lucky number of family members get to experience life onboard their sailor's ship or boat. I was one of those lucky tigers on a 3 day trip aboard my oldest son's submarine. (only male relatives allowed on subs). It was the experience of a lifetime for me. As much as I admired the men and women of our military before, I admired them so much more after the tiger cruise. We had 13 tigers (family members) on my trip. We were allowed to roam freely around the sub, with the exception of the aft engine/reactor area. We used the periscope, fired a simulated torpedo, rode on the bridge, experienced "angles & dangles" (max dives, climbs, & turns), and an emergency blow (sub surfaced so fast we felt the bow jump out of the water. The crew was amazing, everyone was more than happy to explain what their role involved and the aspects of their jobs, from the newest assigned members, right up to the captain. .

I'm sure carrier tiger cruises have their own unique qualities, but all in all, I'd recommend to anyone to jump at the chane to go on one of these trips.

I've done two aboard the USS John C. Stennis... my recommendation?  DO IT, DO IT, DO IT!!!!  You will not regret one moment.  From Pearl Harbor to San Diego, 5 days 6 nights.  Priceless.

My son, whose PIR is Jan 20, 2012, went on a Tiger Cruise in '99 or so, when he was 12, on his uncle's carrier, the Enterprise. He had a great time, learned a lot, and now will end up on a carrier again! Theirs was at the end of a Med cruise, picked up the boat in Florida, and came into Norfolk, so it was 3 days or so.

Absolutely do it! He had so many stories, and got a very cool hardcover 'yearbook', with pictures from the cruise.

I'm trying to get info about this, my sailor leaves soon on his first deployment & I'm reading about this. How much does it cost? And do I have my sailor find out info about it?

Thanks I have been seeing parents talking about it, my sailor will be leaving soon on his first deployment so I'm new at that and trying to understand  the deployment stuff. Thanks again
