Loved ones left 11/7, 8 or 9? Anyone get their kid in a box yet?

My son left 11/9 and it’s only been 5 days but climbing the walls. The first day has been the hardest but I’ve created a couple projects for myself to try and keep busy. The way I see it, there’s roughly 58 days until I’m able to see him again. Even though he said “I’ll call you in 3 week” I’m hoping they’ll be allowed calls on Thanksgiving. I’m wanting to know how everyone is holding up and to know if anyone has gotten their kid-in-a-box yet?

Hi Hospital Corpsmama, how you Holding up. I can understand how you feel 5 days can seem like a very long time, I know it did for me. I am sure they will be allowed calls, They will have a great Thanksgiving Dinner for them at BC. your recruit will have an opportunity to attend Chapel if he desires and have down time in holiday routine as well as having a nice meal. The new recruit will pack "the box" (a 14"x14"x14" brown corrugated cardboard box) soon after arriving and beginning P-days. It most likely will arrive by FedEx within a few days to a week (occasionally, it takes up to 2 weeks, but 3 to 4 business days is typical) after your recruit's arrival at the RTC, but it could arrive by USPS if it is addressed to a PO Box or if you live in an area that FedEx hands off packages to USPS or if you do not live in the continental US. FedEx typically delivers "the box" on weekdays, so keep that in mind.

Recruits have “holiday routine” on Sundays. Federal holidays are hold days and are treated as a Saturday or the recruits may have "holiday routine" depending on the holiday. (See 2017 Federal Holidays.) On those days, they have “free time” from about 7 am to 1 pm CST to attend worship services, take long showers, shave (for females), write letters, catch up on studying, do ironing or other tasks, and get to know their shipmates and help each other with the things they are learning among other things

Ma'am if you would like to follow what your son will be doing week by week this site will explain those things.

Arrival and What Happens at the RTC

I saw this and it got me through the first couple of days. I hope it helps others too. Thank you.
I tried to respond earlier but the iPad was giving me grief. Thanks for your response Phoenixmom. I’m a bit of a control freak and the fact that I don’t have any in this situation is taking its toll. I’m hanging in there but I will feel much better'200% in fact once I hear from him. I actually received “the box” today and reached out to his recruiter and got his address and PIR date- 1/5. I mailed a brief generic I’m proud of you note but not planning to share the address until I get the formal letter.

Knowing that he’ll have a special Thanksgiving meal gives me peace. Learning that they have some down time so early in their training makes me happy. Getting to talk to him on Thanksgiving will certainly be a gift but if I don’t I’ll be ok because I know it’s only a matter of time. Having the PIR gives me a date to countdown to so I’m feeling pretty optimistic.

I hope others here have gotten some news today to give them peace. Thank you for your response Phoenixmom.
My youngest left on the 7th. Got his box yesterday. Have had a really hard time with this. Even though it was his decision. I really miss him. I too am hoping for a call during Thanksgiving. I come from a military background and never thought I'd have one of my children want to join. I am so proud of him and if his grandparents were alive I know they would be too. I wish you all the best! As they say we're all in this boat together.
Hang in there, Silliesmom. I’m told it that either it gets easier or we get stronger- I’m not sure which.

I am so Happy that you are feeling Better, I know how tough it can be. me and my son were very very close and to see my baby leave it broke my heart, I felt like I was in Mourning for weeks. My husband and daughters were so worried about me, Then I found this site it brought me so much relief and was reading on everything I could get my hands on. And Guess what I eventually knew more of what my son was gonna go thru than he did. He hadn't a clue of BST-21 and what it was so in my letters I would give him bits and pieces of what it was. So I actually thought of that as funny because they are so closed out from everything that we as Mothers again Know more than them. Well anytime you need I am here so please reach out! and again keep your head up, everything will be fine!

I love it Phoenixmom... the more you write the more I learn. I had heard of battle stations but when you you mentioned BST-21 in your message I had never heard that term so I looked it up and leared more about it. I’m so glad seasoned moms who have been through this before are here for us who haven’t to show us what we don’t know.

LOL! you are very welcome! they have a you tube video on it and it shows in detail what they go thru called BST-21 and they are up for many hours and then after they have a ceremony and trade their SR caps in for another and then that is when the I'm a Sailor call comes in and they have to stay up still until 8pm so please let your Sailor know when you get the call to stay up keep busy because if they see that they fall asleep they fail. some have failed because they closed their eyes for a few seconds and they call that sleeping. My son had explained all that to me. But any other things you may need let me know. there is so much info out there. And then when I was headed to Chicago I googled everything from google maps to room from airport, to all the restaurants, so I had my work cut out for me. it was fun. I was the Navigator my son in law was the driver. Have a great evening!

My son left on the 13th and I received his box today, the 16th.
How are you holding up Mom2sailors? You got the box pretty fast you must be closer to Great Lakes than I am. Mostly I think my tears are behind me- at least in terms of missing my son. Now I cry when I read about stuff like the capping ceremony at battle stations or thinking of him passing all the smaller tests and inspections along the way. But only for a minute because then I hear my son saying “Mom? Are you crying? Oh my gosh! Knock it off!” But then again I’m the type to cries during commercials. Hang in there, we’re all in this together.

I recieved mine yesterday, my son left 11/9. For the first few minutes all I could do was look at it. Not actually open it. Still confused on the whole address thing to write him, can someone explain? Do I get it with form letter? Call his recruiter?
