My sons PIR is Jan 5 2018.. I just received my first letter today which seemed generic, like a template personalized for us..I can’t wait to talk to him! I have got some Christmas cards to send to him from us and his brothers but I read somewhere on this site to avoid sending any letters or cards...just to send plain white letters in plain white envelopes in order to avoid embarrassment and teasing...someone plz let me know if this is true....also what type of phone cards are you all sending? My son left for boot Nov 13 from Charlotte NC, ship 06 div 050 any info for a newbie Navy mama is very much appreciated!

So happy to make your acquaintance BlessedMama!  My son is also Ship 6, Division 50.  He left on November 9 so you were lucky to have an extra weekend with him.  I have not yet received a letter and so you are lucky in that regard as well!  It may be best to avoid sending cards as I understand that anything other than a standard letter gets opened in front of all.  His older brother graduated from Navy boot camp in December 2010 so this is a second go round for me.  Some things seem to have changed but the feelings are certainly the same.  I miss him so much!

BlessedMama and Suzanne, It is alright to send cards but it is best to have them sent in plain white or cream envelopes. Evidently no stickers on the envelopes, but I had no idea and usually stuck one on the back flap, and my son didn't get in trouble. The cards should not contain any sort of glitter, or be musical. They have to store them in a small 8" x 11 1.5" compartment under there bunk - to the best of my knowledge. It might be helpful to send a folded up gallon size Ziploc bag for them to store their letters and cards in. I did not send pictures, didn't think about printing them on the back of a letter. I typed all of my letters in an email to my son and then copied and printed 2 sided for him, so that he could easily read my handwriting and also get more in on the paper, in less space. Then I always hand wrote a short scriptures or words of encouragement at the bottom for him. Sometimes I had his dad write a note to him. His younger brother wasn't as good about it, but others wrote as  well. I gave them all the same general guidelines. Just be sure not to send anything the last week before PIR as they most likely won't receive it.

Here is the link on the Boot Camp for Moms group page that has information about letter writing -

Here is information about phone cards - http://navyformoms.ning.com/group/bootcampmoms/page/phone-cards-and... -

There is a lot of helpful information in that section of pages on BC 4 Moms group.

If your recruiter didn't tell you to buy a phone card before leaving for BC, they are able to purchase them at the NEX at RTC, I believe. Some mothers send them cards. I had to find ours at CVS pharmacy (like Walgreens). We bought ours before my son left, so he was able to go ahead and activate it and figure out how to use it before he left. I think some people suggest if you are sending the card to activate it beforehand, so they aren't wasting precious phone time activating a calling card.

I do highly recommend you join Bootcamp for Mom's group - even though you are in a PIR group, some of the general questions you have can be answered in BC4Moms, or are posted in the pages to the right of their main page.
