We have an rv and will be traveling to PIR this way. Has anyone stayed in any of the parks in the area? I see a KOA but that's about 16 miles away and not sure I want to be that far. We can if need be but that makes for a very early morning to get to PIR on time. One note- our rv is huge- 43ft and we tow a car so we tent to be limited on places to stay. Any ideas would be awesome. Son's PIR is guessing mid June- he leaves in April.

There is an RV park right on base through the Gateway Inn and suites I believe. They may allow you to book under your SR name if you dont have a military ID... not 100% sure they will allow you to come on base if you don't have a military ID, but it's still worth it to ask.

In the past, it has not been an option for those who do not have a military/retired ID, or are DOD employed civilians.  Can't hurt to call and ask if they've changed their policies.

I saw that, and I doubt they have changed policy. I live in a town that has an AFB and their policy is the same.  Thank you for the suggestion.  I am even considering finding a hotel that has truck parking and staying there- closer to base and probably the same price as a campground.

Mern have you tried looking into the Illinios beach state park they have rv parking campgrounds not to far from Navy base. I think its like 22 min away, you do need to make arrangements

We didn't bring our camper due to time limitations, but we drove by to check out the RV park. My husand said it would be quite interesting driving through base with it. We have 35(ish) not positive, 5th wheel.

well, our son called and said that the "Navy made a fubar" He leaves in June- his original date, not April that they had said he was moved up to. SOOO that of course changes our plans. Looks like he will be home for his brothers High School graduation, and it may be just me that flys to RTC. His brother is Autistic and will be in school again in mid Aug when son grads rtc. At least that's the story today- subject to change yet again.

We just finished PIR, and we took the RV. Of course...we didn't anticipate the blizzard, and running out of propane, but that's another story!!

Propane - Ace hardware is about the ONLY place you can find refill propane, and it is a set fee - any amount, set fee. If you are just doing an exchange, some Walmarts, Menards, Home Depot have those.

RV parking - DO NOT plan on boondocking. Not permitted. Illinois Beach State Park is only a few miles away. They open in April, close late fall. Definitely space to park, ample services, level spots. There are NO year-round parks in the area. Everything opens May 1. The one mentioned above actually opens as a walk-in park on April 1. After that reservations are taken. I would recommend them. We could not stay there, and with the crazy blizzard and HUGE waves coming in, we were glad that we were up in Wisconsin. We were 45 minutes away, but it was a nice drive in, very little traffic, and in the storm it was protected. Only problem we had was trying to get the slide in with 4 inches of snow and ice on it!

If you have anyone in your group with current military ID, you can use the military RV park from May through late fall.

IF you need to, you can rent a hotel room, park the RV in the parking lot (get WRITTEN permission and post in window!!), and come and go. Not all hotels will permit this, so do CALL in advance and ask. Also check the satellite view, as not all parking lots are easy for big rigs. We are 53 feet in total and couldn't make some of the turns for the smaller hotels

Thank you for the information. We will be there mid June so the parks will be open. We have looked into the state beach, and a few others. What is the name of where you stayed? Our bus is 43 ft and we tow a car so we are big. Propane isn't an issue normally for us.

Have thought about hotel with side parking as my sister in law may be coming, though we don't have sleeping space for her. Not sure the hotel would let us sleep in the rv and her in the hotel, may get 2 rooks at hotel, I want to be closer to the base to cut down on drive time PIR morning.

Our situation is fluid as our youngest son graduates on June 8 and if SR son graduates same day we will have an issue. Still waiting on the first letter to see what group SR son will be in

Again, thank you so much for help.

M.
