OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Hi there,
First off I apologize if I’m not posting in the right group, but I’m hoping someone had any info on this. Back in August, I submitted my overseas screening paperwork as well as other documents to get Command sponsorship to join my husband in Sasebo. I’ve been looking on Homes.mil just to sorta get an idea of what housing would look like for us (we have no children) and I’m seeing these insane fees! Does anyone know what I could expect as far as finances go for housing if/when I get Command sponsorship ?? Thanks!!

You'll get OHA, which covers the cost of housing.  Unlike BAH, it is not a set amount where you can pocket the excess, it will match rent and utilities pretty closely.  Yes, rent in Japan is very high.  If there's room on base, they may* require you to live in base housing rather than rent.  It's like that in Yokosuka, where you don't get to choose.  *edit Looks they do require you to live in housing.

There is also a move in allowance.

Here is the oha calculator.  It may say the site is not safe, but it is.  Just choose "advanced" and proceed onto the site.  Their security certificates aren't updated is all.  Won't give you a virus.

Effective 25 Jun 2013 all Active Duty Accompanied Members must reside in on-base housing.

All incoming military families are involuntarily assigned to MFH meeting their eligibility requirements based on rank and family composition (sorry - I know we love them, but dogs are not considered to be part of the family composition for housing assignment purposes), without regard to location (Dragon Vale or Hario Village) or type of unit (garden-style apartment, townhouse, or tower unit).  Members declining involuntary assignment will no longer be eligible to receive a government funded courtesy move (moving from off-base to on-base) and Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA) is forfeited in 30 days or on the availability date of the unit offered, whichever is later.  Furthermore, Member will not be eligible for Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA) and (Move In Housing Allowance (MIHA) entitlements."

Just another question, and I’m sure I can’t but is there any way of finding out how much longer till my paperwork is all finished? I know my husband mentioned it has to be approved by the command and that can take a while but I’m not aware of anything else with the process. It was submitted in early August.

i don't know all the details, but my son is currently living off base (Yokosuka) with his wife.  they married last year (he'd already been there for over a year at that point) - he does receive a housing/utility allowance, but only up to a certain dollar amount and the housing had to be within a specific distance from base. he did have to put up some of his own deposit monies which he will get back.  housing is very expensive and apartments in Japan are much smaller than one is used to in the US.

Getting into housing is hard, so when it is full they can choose offbase.  If there's a certain percentage of units open, and they are the right size for the couple/family, they might not get the ofbase option.

I was in a tiny Japanese house for years.  It was quite old, unheated and uninsulated, with two tatami rooms, a small kitchen, a tiny den, and a large entryway.  The toilet and the tub were in separate rooms.  We had a nice side porch, but it was small.  Tiny cold water washer and no dryer, no oven, and a breaker box which wouldn't let you run a hairdryer and anything else at the same time.
