Hello all, So here is my question, My daughter worked her butt off at bootcamp and A school ( like all the sailors) and while in A school they asked ' what is your 3 wish list to be stationed? well that doesnt seem to matter because she got somewhere , where she is really disappointed. what is the point of a wish list if your not going to get even close. Does anyone know if you can transfer or if there or any options to switch where you go? concerned mama and concerned about my daughter being depressed for the next 3 years

The needs of the Navy come first - you usually don't have much if any say on your first posting. When she's ready to PCS (move duty stations) in a few years, then she'll have the opportunity to pick from available slots but even then, there are no guarantees that she'll be chosen for those slots or that what's available will be what's she's hoping for.
It's natural to be disappointed by getting orders somewhere you're not hoping to go but there are ALWAYS positives to any location. Encourage her to look for those - whether it be opportunities to advance, being near to interesting places, new experiences etc...
I suspect once she gets there she'll be too busy at first to be disappointed - there's plenty of in-doc and on boarding plus getting to know the ship/base and the people she'll be working with. And then she can take time to make friends and explore what's available in the area. Remember she'll accrue leave and she can use that to come home or to travel.
thank you your response and I am being very positive when speaking with her. I guess I just dont understand why soo many of her classmates are going where she was hoping and yet she is almost the only one that didnt.
there's really no telling why? She might be a different rank or she may have done better or worse in the A school ranking or it may just be the luck of the draw.
I know coming out of A school, my son got shore duty when most get sea duty right off the bat. Where he was sent wasn't on his wishlist but he ended up loving it (he went to Okinawa Japan). He's back stateside now and still not on a ship, lol.
Milliemax2,
I hate to say this but this is being in the military. They ask this question, and try to make it work but it is also where they need personnel. When I was in and got asked that question, I so wanted to be either overseas or east coast. I was sent to the west coast, because they had a new LHD class ship that was being built and needed a crew for the it. I was disappointed but I am glad now that I was sent to that ship.
Here the thing, dont let her count out where she is going before she gets there and see what it is like. You never know she may end up liking it. Also your reaction, will also play into it. Maybe look up where she is going and tell her some fun facts that would get her excited about it. It really is truly, up to her if she is going to give it a chance or not. It will also affect how she enjoy her time.
Also there is no switching, it is really where they need personnel. It will be okay for your daughter. Let her get there and see. If after three years, she decides military life isn't for her. She can get out and move on.
Have a Wonderful Day;-)
