I see in alot of the post where a recruit changes his vocations, I know my son signed a contract for nuclear, is it common for them to change it. Is there a penalty if they do?

Northwoodsmom, changing from a Nuke contract to something else in BC will likely lower your son's rate that he went into BC and thus lower his pay. Also a Nuke contract is for a 6 year obligation when most of the other rates only have a 4 year obligation. With a nuclear contract, It is highly unlikely that your son will be allowed to change his vocation at BC. That said, if he gets to Goose Creek, SC and goes through A school and struggles or even Power School, or Prototype, and for some reason he is "re-rated", he will change vocations. But, YES, there will most likely be monetary penalties. I don't know how it affects their time commitment.

Did you see my comment on your page, where I gave you the link to join the Nuke Moms group? I highly recommend that you join that group as there is a lot of information on our page, but also many who have even more knowledge than I do on the Nuclear Program. My son is an ETN3 on the USS Gerald R. Ford, he graduated Prototype in April 2019, so I can give you what I know, but we are always learning new things or glean more knowledge from others. And many of those members don't necessarily follow the discussion on the Boot Camp Moms group to see your questions.

Northwoodsmom, my son changed his rate while in boot camp.  Apparently, it's pretty rare.  He was going to be an aerographer, but at boot camp he changed to corpsman.

Thank you Tammy_Girl, I guess in nuclear they can't change, it is a different rate, it can get changed if they don't keep their studies up .

Changes for nukes don't happen very often without cause. However, someone I work with had her son switch from nuke to being a code breaker. He lost his nuke signing bonus and didn't qualify for any others because his original contract wasn't for code breaking.
