Hi all

my son Just left last week for boot camp. My understanding was that we would not get his address until he arrived at GL, after ROM. We just received a text from our sons recruiter with an address - which concerns me, because it is too soon, and because the ship in number 7, which I believe is for recruits that are not scheduled to graduate.... does anyone know what this means??

thank you!

Mary - I believe that Ship 7 is just one of the barrack ships.  Ship/Division--How it Works - Navy For Moms (ning.com) - As for being too early to know you are probably correct. Generally, they have to have a recuit mail person trained before he will be able to receive his mail. Also, you need his division # as well as the Ship #.

I would hold off from mailing anything. Also, if your son is being set back or separated - any change of status - he should be giving you a call. Be sure to read through information on the RTC website Recruit Training Command Home Page (navy.mil) as well. Continue to hold on to "No News is Good News".

The recruiter was probably just thinking that he was helping out and maybe you could find a FB group if you had a ship # but I would wait as well.

Thanks Chipmunk!
his division is 988 - does that mean the music division?

Mary during Live PIR the 900 division was part of the color guard, musicians and "security". Lemonelephant updated her post in April 2020 - 800 and 900 Divisions - Navy For Moms (ning.com)  so I am not certain about the 900 division. It doesn't necessarily mean he is doing music, but I am not certain. If you do have a Ship# and a Div# you may always go ahead and write him. Some things we are still not certain on, such as the P-days so our dates and timing might be off.

If you do write him, keep in mind that it might still not get to him. So, just write brief encouraging notes and let him know that as soon as you have his Form letter with his address written in that, then you will send him longer letters and maybe some stamps or a SASE. My son had gotten stationary and envelops at the NEX but the moms often still send stamps to the SRs.

If you don't have it, this page has the addresses for the ships - Recruit Training Command - FAQ (navy.mil)   Address it in the format they show.

Hi Mary,

I had some further information to share. Another mom reminded me that some of the recruiters were giving out 900 division #s to families with an address that was not valid. I guess they may be using 900 as an indicator for the SRs while they are at Ft. McCoy, which would make sense if this seemed to be too early for you to have an address. If the street # did not match up with what I gave you, then I think you should probably wait.

When this came up in the BC Mom group discussion (this is not posted in the same place) someone had been given the same sort of information as you have been by a recruiter and found out that the mail wasn't getting to the recruits. I am sorry, I had forgotten about this.

Thanks so much Chipmunk!

The weird thing is that the recruiter said that the address will be where my son will ultimately be housed - he encouraged me to write letters now - he said that he had heard that some people had mail rerouted to Fort McCoy, based on the GL address.....I find that hard to believe, but decided to send a Sandboxx letter today, just in case it is true and that my son can receive a letter in ROM.  This is all so confusing...... But, I am doing my best to be flexible and agile and go with the flow.  I am also writing traditional letters to my son, which I am numbering and will send to him in GL once I get the official communication regarding his address.  Thanks again for all of your help!

Mary

You are welcome. I just wanted you to know that your letters might not reach your son. That is interesting what the recruiter said. It is so hard to know, we all are doing our best to figure out what is actually going on with the addresses and the ROM.

Everything is so fluid and changing all the time. I will definitely let everyone know if the letters make it to him in ROM - I have my doubts....I used Sandboxx to send the first letter. I will keep everyone posted.
