Submarine moms are special:

--- All of us have boys, "SAILORS!"

 --- Who serve on "boats,"

 --- With whereabouts unknown, and

--- We only get sporadic, short emails while they're out!

Today has not been a good day for me. I am sorry that I am venting to you all. My son inlaw who is in the Air Force has told me that he and my daughter are getting a divorce. I email my daughter and she has not replied. So I do not know if this is true or not. Then my son who is on a carrier right now sends me an email about my daughter Jenny. Jenny is deployed right now.

I wish I could talk to my son that is on the USS. Pennslyvania. However I guess there is no contact for a submarine. The submarine is all new to me. I am use to my other son on a carrier. So how do you all do this? I am the mom of both carrier and submarine. I would think it would be a lot harder on the wives and girlfriends of the submariners?

I am very impressed though..The Air Force does not seem to have a program like the Navy does. Josh is a Fire tech?
Hi Pam: I just saw this, and am feeling guilty for not sending you an e-hug. {{{ }}}}. How are you doing? I've gotten a couple of contacts that I've posted in the Bangor/Kitsap group - do you want them? I'm still looking for newsletter's etc. When you can - check in - and please know that all of you are in my prayers.~s
USS Nebraska out of WA for my son.
My son, Peter, is an engineering officer on the USS Louisiana (a boomer) out of Bangor, WA. His roommates are on the USS Maine. I think these are all VERY special men. How many of us could do what they are doing?
Lynn-have you heard from your son yet? I still haven't had an email from Austin. Just curious.
Is your son still on the Louisiana? My son Aaron is on the Louisiana. This is his very first sub. He is a NUKE; a EM4.
My son is on the USS Columbus in Hawaii--ET NAV-still in process of getting "qualiified" on the sub. I didn't realize it was such a long process to get checked in
I don't know what you meant by "checked in," but "qualified" means earning the silver (gold for officers) pin they call their "dolphins." It's a submarine flanked on either side by a dolphin fish (there's a pic of it on my page). It's earned by accomplishing all the qualifications ("quals") in skills and knowledge to make one a trained submarine sailor or a "qualified submariner." Some of the quals can only be signed off while underway. It's a big deal when he gets it, so keep cheering him on!

And by the way, I hate having Drew in Seattle... but I'd REALLY be nuts if he were in Hawaii! God bless 'ya, girlfriend! Hugs, K.
I meant the time it took from when he arrived in HI to when he could report to his boat every day. It came in while he was in what he called "I-Div." He arrived August 28th and finally got out of I Div about 2 weeks ago....
At least we have an excuse to go visit Hawaii, hopefully! Do you know how long they are assigned or stationed at one base? Dean says this is his permanent duty station which means he'll be stationed there for the next 4 years. Is that correct?
Probably so. Generally, they don't change duty stations if they only stay for the minimum (4 years regular enlisted, 6 years nuke enlisted).

They can apply for a transfer after three years, but if he's only in for 4, why bother? Granted, if they re-up (which many nukes do, for the 2-yr signing bonus), then a transfer can become more likely. But, I get the feeling that the sailors get very 'territorial' about their boat and stay with her for as long as they can.
Hi Deana,
I heard that your son is on the USS Columbia. So is my son, MM2 Christopher Patton. He's been on the sub since Sept 07. He is stationed there for 3-yrs and then I'm not sure where he'll go from there. I've been to Hawaii twice before (my husband just retired from the Navy after 22-yrs), but I would love to got back and see CJ while he is there.
OK Kim, I'm an idiot... Deana said her son was on the ColumBUS and I was not paying attention, so remembered it as the ColumBIA! This is what I get for trying to act like I know something...

My search info is valid for Kim, but not for Deana :-[ Kaye (aka "Dim")
