I know about missing the calls. I got and 888 number and will forward the home phone to my cell - hopefully not telemarketers. I am not sure the base phones can make 1-888 calls so I can turn the service off if it doesn't work. I leave my phone all night and carry it everywhere. Have you found anyone in his division?
Just an FYI,
The phone calls that I have gotten from my son have the 847 area code.
Thanks - I could not remember the area code. How many times have you heard from him? I just got the I'm here call and nothing else. 3 weeks on Monday!
Hi! My name is Georgette and my son, Kevin, left for bootcamp 2 days ago (3/11/08). I am a Navy retiree and thought I'd do better emotionally than I am! I attended bootcamp 23 years ago in Orlando and I'm sure many things have changed since then! Kevin is 21 and will go to school in Charleston for the nuclear field after bootcamp. He tried college and I was very surprised when he came home one day and told me he'd like to go talk to a recruiter!! My husband is also a retiree and we have 2 other sons, Josh 15 and Tyler 8. We live about 30 miles SE of Kansas City, Missouri. I'm very happy to have found this site!!!
Hi Georgette!

I too live in Missouri....down at Lake of the Ozarks! My son Brian just graduated 3/7/08. Welcome aboard!

Elaine
Thanks! How was the graduation? Were you always confident that he would graduate or scared like some of us?
To be honest, I knew he would. Brian is my oldest of 3 and has always been responsible and older than his years. He goal is to make the Navy his career as a Navy Chaplain. He's pretty hard headed and knows what he wants.....

He was a section leader and was second in the voting for his division to be chosen as the honor grad. Trust me, I'm truly not boasting! Only being a proud mom....;)

Elaine
Well I WOULD boast! Ryan is my only son and the youngest - not always the responsible one!
Thank you. I bet you'll see a change in Ryan when he gets out of boot camp! You're in my prayers! Hang tough Sherry.....he'll make you a very proud momma and bring proud tears to your eyes when you see him next!

Elaine
His Dad and I am really proud of Ryan and so are his sisters and brothers in law. I look forward to the graduation. I think he will take this very seriously - it is very serious. I would sure like to hear something from him though! Did you say your son is going to Iraq? I think you said he was going to be a chaplain. Wow - that is a very responsible position. I hope it all goes well for him! We took the entire family to Mexico for Christmas this year - before we knew about the Navy. Anyway, I told my 6 year old grandson that we would take another trip in 2 years probably to wherever Ryan is and he said "you are taking us to the war?". Ooops - we will have to be careful about what we say to them.
Brian is pretty sure that he's going to be deployed to Iraq. I guess the job that he signed for has an over abundance of sailors in that field. So "they" told him that they're going to be needing sailors over there to support the Marines and Army in the desert. Either Brian can volunteer and have some control over the length of duty or they'll tell him he's going and he's at their mercy. So I told him that if it were me and those were my choices, I'd sure volunteer.

Bless your grandson's heart. Out of the mouths of babes, huh? I'm praying that the war will end soon and our troops will be able to start coming home. And it's not that I don't support our efforts over there and the sacrifices other families are making and have already made. And I'm so very grateful for the men and women defending our country. But it sure hits home when it's my own flesh and blood. I just pray and pray and pray that God will keep Brian in His arms and protect him.

Elaine
I have done more praying in the last threee months then I have in the prior 50 years! These soldiers, sailors etc are so precious. Especially when it hits so close to home. God Bless them all!
