Some of our initial moms from Navy for Moms are starting to see their sons and daughters complete A school. Depending on their classification, it could mean more advance training and for others it could mean orders to a ship or shore duty.

Every ship in the US Navy fleet serves it's specific purpose - do you know what kind of ship is on your son or daughter's "Dream List"?

In the School and Education Forum, I have started slowly pulling together some basic information by ship type for your review. It could be a great conversation with your sailor - what type of ship would they like to be on and why?

I currently have three or four types of ships posted and will work on adding to it in the days ahead. Hope this is helpful to any mom wondering...what happens after school.

If I understand everything correctly, my son is going to the USS Carl Vinson ported in Norfolk, VA one month after he leaves boot camp. The Carl Vinson is a Nimitz class Supercarrier that can carry
85 planes and 5500 personnel. It carries F/A-18 Hornets and F/A-18 E/F Super Hornets, surveillance equipment and other aircraft. It was commissioned in 1982. What he does once he gets there is still in question.....I know his goal is to work directly under a Mass Communications Sailor, so he can develop a learning for that part of the field. He doesn't have a "A" school, nor did he have a "dream list".....he just wanted to get out and see the world. The ship is stateside until 2009 sometime and doesn't return until 2010 and will dock at it's new homeport in San Diego, CA.
The Nimitz class is the "granddaddy" of all ships but it will travel in a fleet with the other ships around it. It is so big, it is like a traveling town. I put some details about the carriers on the education page.

Did you get to watch the Carrier special that was on a few weeks ago?
Do we have many non-designated sailors out there ? The more involved I am the more I am hearing about these sailors who go in without a school ( right to fleet) What jobs are these guys then.......or are they the ultimate *whatever we need at the moment* Sailors. They must be on the job training ? This is interesting to me ....... Now that's an adventure !!! BUT to know what ship you are on BEFORE you even get out of BC ........ that must be so nice :)
I don't know how many are out there, Molly, but yes, my son is classified as undesignated. The school he wanted into is full and has not much expectation of having many openings soon. ( Media, journalism ) Therefore, as he puts it, he will go stateside to the Carl Vinson and be a "whatever we need at the moment" Sailor and will hopefully get to obtain OJT by following the Mass Communications
Specialist on the Vinson. He was told this may be a way to opt out of "A" school and get what he wants quicker. He will continue to "Bid" or "Strike" at an opportunity to get into "A" school if an opening comes open...but what he is telling me, is that newly graduated Sailors get bumped by older active Sailors that are requesting to change jobs into the Media area first. There may be some
with top high ASVAB scores that they accept first, but Jake was midline between the lowest acceptable and the highest for that profession..(kinda like a c+ so the recruiter explained to us)...and he will have to wait until there is an opening that no one else vies for...or stay OJT on a ship....He does sound excited about being
on ship tho...cause he will get his deployment early in his career.
Very interesting .......... he actually has a great opportunity with this, because he can "strike" for whatever interests him. So lets say he See's the flight deck and decides ordinance is interesting he can strike at anytime for it. VS my son who has a rate, is locked in for while then he can "strike" for something else.......BUT I think he has to put his training into practice for awhile ( I want to say 2 years before he can even think about changing rates) BUT don't quote me on that number.
Also because he is a *whatever we need* guy.....he should be able to experience many different sides.
Hey Thanks for all the info here ........have never talked to a undesignated before. And have always wondered. ( I just love learning things here )
And you see how wonderful this is ..........Everyone brings experience and knowledge to here. BC mom's are always so thankful about all the help they get ......I always try to explain to them how much info they have and they too are teachers :) Perfect example right here ! Thanks again ........
When are you going to PIR ?
Jake is scheduled for PIR 5/30. (woohoo!! 10 days!) My father and I are flying up Thursday morning to Midway and picking up a rental car and driving on up to Great Lakes. My fiance', my daughter and her husband and 2 children are flying up Thursday night to join us (they had to work half a day)...I took vacation from work for the next week to ensure that I would get to spend time with Jake. Grandpa going is a surprise!! He doesn't know that he will be there. He was a bit disappointed that his brother couldn't make it...but having his Gramps there will make it ALL better...along with me, of course...LOL
OH how sweet .........grandpa going. :)
And you are most definitely on the down side of BC .......is he gradngo to Virgina ? Or does he get the weekend / hold in GL for awhile ?
He gets the weekend to spend with us, of course, back when liberty ends in the evening.....but then he has 2 and a half weeks in GL for "C" training (?)...then he comes home for a 2 wk. liberty/visit and then reports to the USS Carl Vinson in Norfolk, VA for what he says is the next 2 yrs, subject to change.
Very nice , sounds good......... your very calm cool and collected :)
You know your stuff.
Amazing BC mom right here ladies !! LOL
No for real this is not your first in BC is it ? That's my guess :)
Highly recommend watching it ...........you can go to PBS.com and look when it will replay again. Or even buy it for I think about $30.
Very very insightful
For real, Molly, it is my first boot camp with a child of mine. I had two brothers and a sister in the Navy, but many years ago. I just do alot of research and ask alot of questions, but I give it up to my son...who has kept me informed and when he called last Saturday....he had it ready to share with me. He knows I do alot
of investigation or research about things I don't understand. It's always good to learn as much as you can and be ready for anything that comes your way...I learned that from raising three teenagers on my own....LOL>
I am the EXACT same way ........as a matter of fact anyone who knows me here knows I am an information hound. LOL I love it ..........its like I am in school again, I study it all. From what an exact rate does to how the ships run, to navy slang. I thrive on it !!
I am so impressed with you :)
Were gonna get along like peas in a pod :) Whoppie another info hound !!
So this is your BS week then isnt it ?
