Some of our initial moms from Navy for Moms are starting to see their sons and daughters complete A school. Depending on their classification, it could mean more advance training and for others it could mean orders to a ship or shore duty.

Every ship in the US Navy fleet serves it's specific purpose - do you know what kind of ship is on your son or daughter's "Dream List"?

In the School and Education Forum, I have started slowly pulling together some basic information by ship type for your review. It could be a great conversation with your sailor - what type of ship would they like to be on and why?

I currently have three or four types of ships posted and will work on adding to it in the days ahead. Hope this is helpful to any mom wondering...what happens after school.

Navy’s New PACT With Undesignated Sailors
Story Number: NNS070809-14
Release Date: 8/9/2007 5:45:00 PM

(I do hope my son gets to meet this sailor here)By Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Apprentice Philip Schrickel, USS Carl Vinson Public Affairs

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NNS) -- The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) will be transitioning its general detailed (GENDET) workforce to an effective general apprentice program along with the rest of the fleet in fiscal year 2008 (FY-08).

Professional Apprenticeship Career Tracks (PACT) is a program designed to enlist Sailors into a monitored general apprenticeship program that provides Apprentice level formal training and on the job training that leads to a viable career field within two years on board their first Permanent Duty Station. Undesignated Seamen will be accessed into the PACT Program commencing FY-08. Apprentice Airmen and Firemen will participate in FY-09.

“PACT will help us break Sailor’s careers down in order to help them know where they are headed,” said Chief Navy Counselor (AW/SW) Jeff Sabia, of Carl Vinson’s command career counselor office. “We will be able to keep track of the Sailor’s progress and where their career takes them.”

According to the Navy Counselors Association (NCA), one of the main focuses of PACT is emphasizing a two-way commitment between the Sailor and the Navy. By implementing aviation (A-PACT), engineering (E-PACT), and surface (S-PACT) professional apprenticeship career tracks, the NCA has asserted that the Navy will be able to better assist in the personal and professional development of its Sailors. The Career Information Management System (CIMS) will be used to monitor Career Development Boards and Fleet RIDE rating eligibility screening will continue to be mandated to ensure PACT Sailors are placed into career paths they are eligible for.

“As a career counselor, I personally look forward to watching the development and working with the Sailors who will be enrolled in the PACT program,” said Operations Specialist 2nd Class Keri Childs.

Carl Vinson is currently undergoing its scheduled refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) at Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard. The RCOH is an extensive yard period that all Nimitz-class aircraft carriers go through near the mid-point of their 50-year life cycle.

During RCOH, Carl Vinson’s nuclear fuel will be replenished and the ship’s services and infrastructure will be upgraded to make her the most state-of-the-art aircraft carrier in the fleet and prepare for another 25 years or more of service.

are we running this whole thread, Molly?? LOL.......
It certainly wouldn't be the first time for me ............ BUT we are exchanging valuable information still. Its when it gets too silly that stuff gets lost. WE are on tract here :)
( patting us on the back)
well...some of US moms have to work...at least a little each day!!! hehehehe
Thanks ........ now I will be able to understand. I am assuming your son is A -PACT then :)
I haven't been formally informed that he is...but, when I mentioned PACT to him, he seemed to recognize the term....I suppose that means he could be.
Wow - this is great information. First I had heard about the undesignated! I'm thinking we will be seeing more of this as time goes on.
Well, I hope that it is helpful information, I hadn't even heard of it at all until he started explaining it to me...he said, of course, he wasn't happy about not being able to get into "A" school, but is satisfied that they didn't shove him into another job...so this will do for now. I found the information by going to Yahoo and typing in "undesignated sailor"...simple as that, I got several really good websites that had information over it.....I think it's a newer program......just started up last year. We'll see how it goes.
This is great stuff ladies. Thanks for starting this thread Mary.
