The purpose of this forum is designed to inform those parents of sailors who aspire to the rate of GM. It is intended to aide parents with what to expect once their sailor graduates boot camp (BC)..also known as PIR, and moves to the A-School side of the base. Questions will be answered by the family of sailors who are training to be GMs. If we don't have the answers, we will get them for you.

Please introduce yourself if your sailor is in the GM rate and provide background on your sailor so that we can get to know you. If you have specific questions about these ratings, and you ask them here, Will and Hoppi will be able to answer your questions. This will help all of us because the answers won't disappear pages down in the general forum.

I want to give Gary T. credit for this great idea; he just hired me as his secretary to put it together. So, jump in and we hope this will be helpful to all of you.

Thankyou Vee for that information I will read up more on this site about it. My name is April and my son's name is Brian, he graduates boot camp on the 30th of December 2009 and heads right to A school there in Great Lakes as Gunner's Mate. He would not have chosen GM but his recruiter at the time said that was all that was left for him to take. He is a very intelligent man, he likes working with machinery, he worked at a fabrication shop for 2 1/2 yrs before going into navy. But he is doing real well in boot camp, thankyou again.
Hi again April....Michael was told the same thing by his recruiter over a year ago. GM wasn't his choice, but he wanted to go in badly enough he took it. I'm so glad Brian is doing well in boot camp. He will be moving over to the school side soon now. I'll add Brian's name to the list...Thanks for sending it to me. MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and your family...Vee
They are never given "extra" leave days, but they are given travel days for when they are in transit. Whether they can use those days to go see family depends on how far away the family lives off the main course of travel. The Navy does not pay for side trips to visit family. If the time window to report to their new command is big enough, they may have enough time to take leave in conjunction with their travel time and get to go home.
Thanks Anti M for defining those travel days better for me. I only spoke briefly with Michael and will know more after he talks with his PLR today. Home is right on the way to San Diego for him so that should be no problem. And he has about 15 days leave of his own to use. So, he will know more today. MERRY CHRISTMAS! I am off to Georgia to spend the holidays with my family back there....
Merry Christmas to all! We will have an especially Merry Christmas because David will be home. He returns to GL on January 3rd and then back to San Diego on January 6th. Says he has 2 weeks leave but will be working with his recruiter. Didn't get his C school for some reason. He said there was about 5 that didn't get C school and that no one seems to know why. Oh well, at least he'll be close. His brother is also coming from Denver for Christmas. Hope you all have a blessed Christmas and let's all keep praying for all of our sailors here and away from home.
Mary at least David will be moving in the correct direction. Far away from Great Lakes. Give him my best. What did he choose for orders? Will be be state side or will he be assigned a ship? lewt us know. Gary T.
He chose San Diego as that is home. He is assigned to the Antietam (which, oddly enough, we have a friend who used to be on that ship a few years ago!)
Hi Mary, You enjoy your Christmas with your sons. As Gary T said, please let us know what David will be doing in San Diego. Hmmmmm! I wonder why he didn't get his C school?? Michael is leaving for home this Friday which is right on the way to his C school in San Diego. His dad is flying back to GL to drive home with him. He reports to San Diego on 13 Jan 10, so he will have a nice lot of days at home. He and I plan to have our day on 06 Jan when I return to Calif from Georgia. MERRY CHRISTMAS....Vee
Our son Devin, got his orders after graduating from A school. He will be attending C school for VLS and will be stationed in San Diego Calif. He is a North Dakota boy and has never been to California. I am afraid he will not want to come back to the cold weather here unless to go hunting with his father but you never know. We are so very proud of him and all the sailors. Thank You all for ALL you do. Devin will be home for Christmas on Fri 12-18-09 and then return to GLakes on hold until he leaves for Calif. He is very excited and happy with his orders.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to ALL!
Darcy
Hello Darcy....Devin will love San Diego. Does he know where he will go after San Diego? Perhaps he and Michael will be in the same VLS class. Enjoy your son when he joins you for the holidays. Hugs, Vee
Darcy, what does Devin's orders say? Does it give him a class number, starting date, graduation date and ship assignment? Nick is scheduled for VLS class 201, 01 Feb 10. Graduation 17 May 10 and Hi on 20 may 10. Enjoy Devin over the Christmas holiday. Gary T.
Gary T,
Devin did say his ship will be DDG 104 but nothing about a departing from GLakes day or when anything would start in San Diego. I will be anxiously waiting for your input on the VLS schooling there so we can tell Devin what to expect. We live in North Dakota so he is looking forward to the warm weather. I have tried searching for a VLS or San Diego group but haven't found anything so will just look for you and Vee here on the GM site. I was looking at my husban's NavyDad info the other night and you and he have also communicated there. Funny how we Navy parents stick together.
Have a Blessed Holiday Season!
Darcy

ps. any ides what is the protocol for attending funerals? Dev's great grandmother passed away yesterday and we will be attending the funeral. Does he wear his Dress Blues or civilian clothes?
thanks
