I wish I knew more ........you know those Nukes gotta have some term.
I have a NUKE in boot camp right now and he said in his letter the other day that everyone thinks that Nukes are world of warcraft geeks. He said I am just a regular guy who is good in math. LOL I had to laugh
OMG! This is the first I've heard of this! Okay, so my kid's in A school to be a jet engine mechanic...WHAT will she be????
Jet engine mechanic is an Airdale .....green stripe, brown shoes :)

holy moly you are good....I am all crazy lol
Ok, I am really confused, but would like to know what my son is! He is in "C" school and is studying to be an Aviation Electronics Technician. He just got his Petty Officer 3rd. He was classified as an ATAN when he graduated "A" school, but is now classified as an ATO 3rd class. So, what is he?
AT-- Aviation Electronics Technician

AT-- Aviation Electronics Technician (Aircrew)

AT-- Aviation Electronics Technician (Advanced Electronics Field)

So it depend which one he does BUT as for slang terms I think he is an airdale, brown shoe and just maybe wears a colored shirt ?

As for the colored shirts here is the link

Hope that helps :) BTW the AT was what he signed for but obviously did well and went into advanced to become ATO :)
Just found it on the rainbow site
Look under the white shirts and right there it is
ATO
Air Transfer Officers (ATO)
Way cool ...........
so he is an airdale, brown shoe, white shirt !!!
Wow that is cool ........ I will have to go and figure out what they do now :) LOL I love this navy stuff.
This is too funny! But it's also cool! I will have to check out more! Thanks for the info- it is appreciated! :)
Don't forget green stripe and now that he made petty officer 3rd, not sure what all else! LOL this is too funny!
Hi Molly, you are close, but not quite correct. That's the problem with Navy acronyms. The definition is determined by the context. ATC means Air Traffic Control or Aviation Electronics Technician Chief Petty Officer, so the context where the acronym is used will determine the meaning. For example, my wife worked in ATC as a Radar Supervisor, and I am a retired ATC. Clear as mud?

ATs are subdivided into two specialties, Organizational level (ATO) meaning they work on the aircraft to repair the avionics systems, and Intermediate level (ATI) meaning they work on the avionics components in an airconditioned repair facility (called AIMD ashore or IMA afloat).

So, an ATO3 is a 3rd class petty officer working in a squadron doing day to day maintenance on the aircraft, and may be in charge of a small team of technicians at times.

Also, the color of the shirts is a carrier flight deck thing. Anyone who is a troubleshooter (fixing aircraft or catapaults, etc) wears green; those who fuel aircraft (ABF) wear purple; Quality assurance, Safety, and medical personnel wear white; the aircraft handlers (ABH) wear yellow; junior personnel of most aviation ratings could be plane captains (brown shirt) or trainees (blue shirt); Ordnance (AO) and fire fighters wear red.

The brown shoe thing is a carry over from WWII or something, when aviators (pilots) wore brown boots. Now, only chiefs and officers are authorized to wear the brown shoes (unless uniform regs have changed again).

Hope this helps, Kevin
Wonderful for those of us that are trying sooooo hard to figure all this out! I'm still trying to figure out AD, my daughter's school, she's going to be a jet engine mechanic...SOMEDAY...if Pensacola can get rid of the failures from Fleet (note the sarcasm?)!
You know I have been seeing this more often. I will read one description for an acronym, then a few days later read yet another description.
So I see that it depends on the context as to what definition is correct.
This is so difficult for someone who has never been involved in the navy to figure out !!
I give it a good college try though !
Thanks for the clarification :) Wish I had a pocket you with me at all times ! LOL
