My son flies from BC to Charleston March 23rd. Since he is an MM, his "A" school is 13 weeks. Counting the weeks it looks like he won't graduate from nuke power school until January 2011 or later.
I understand that the school stands down for Christmas break and he can come home.
Does anyone know the dates when the school stands down? I want to buy airline tickets for Mexico.
Thanks
Bob

Last year it was the 19th, but I honestly can't be sure :( Sorry girls! This is one of those times that the Navy makes it hard to plan ahead!
The stand down time is usually the same as when regular grade schools get off. Two weeks beginning the Sat. before Christmas and ending the Sunday after the 1st. Looking at the calendar looks like it would be Dec.18th to Jan 2nd. (Last year it was Dec.19th to Jan 3rd) My son knew far enough in advance that he booked his tickets on Halloween for his trip home (while I was on the phone and both of us looking online to pick a flight which he paid for). They actually could leave Friday afternoon as they were let out by noon that Friday but you should comfirm that as a different instructor might not. (They get to leave also so are wanting to get on the road if they are going out of town to family etc.) P.S. for the future this doesn't count if they are in Prototype.
I only know what happened last year, I think he flew in on the 19th and went home on Jan 2nd, because he had to report to base by 12:30 on the 3rd, and we couldn't find a good flight that would get him there early enough, so he decided to leave on the 2nd. They kept him in the dark about approving his "chit" until the last minute. Unfortunately, they need to apply for the 'chit' and then wait, have to purchase the tickets, then show the receipt to their superior, then they are told whether they can go or not. For any reason (so my son tells me) they can change their mind and not let them go. It was great because the school was shut down, he was able to come home and not use up any of his leave days. Although the school is shut down, they still require some personnel to stay on campus, standing watch, cleaning, etc. I'm not sure if they are allowed to leave the country...anyone know? He was also allowed to come home over Thanksgiving, I don't know if they would have let him anyway, but his G-ma passed, although they didn't know that when he booked his ticket, but they did know she was on her deathbed (if he told them).
If they left the base during the Christmas stand down they used their leave days. Check their LES statement. My son was debited 15 days of leave.
Do all the levels of schooling shut down for Christmas? My son is trying to figure out when he can plan a wedding.
Prototype doesn't stand down. A School and Power school do.
I would say December 18th through January 2nd based on in the past on how they usually have their stand-downs, again remember it's the Navy, no guarantee of the dates in place until it is actually very close to it.
