With so moms of recruits in boot camp, I'm hoping this will be a chance to gather words of advice from moms who have already been there/done that. So, please, if you have already experienced PIR, post any insights -- things to look for, to experience, places to be sure to go (or not to go!),you name it! Thank you in advance!

Hope you don't mind...I did a scan through history in our Nor Cal group and am copying posts that include PIR advice. (Please let me know if you see anything you'd like edited or removed).

...for Pizza, we went to Giordano's in the suburb called Gurnee, it is not far from the base. There is a big mall in Gurnee, too. The pizza place is near the mall, in a shopping center called Buffalo Grove. It was very good Chicago stuffed pizza, and we had Tiramisu for dessert, it was great.

...the NEX that's on base in Great Lakes is o.k. but have your child take you to the NEX that's off base next to the Commonsary, it's on Green Bay Road, that one is really awesome! If you get onto Green Bay Road on Buckley (coming from base) it'll be on your left, you can't miss it, it's a Navy strip mall. You'll have to have your kid with you because the employees there will check ID. Take the Metra into Chicago, best way to go, and it's only $5.10 each way on Friday, but Sat/Sun pass is $5.00 for unlimited rides. Sears Tower is $14.95 per person, military free, Navy Pier, and the museum of Natural Science and Aquarium are free for military (although we didn't get to do those, ran out of time, but hear they are a must see)

One word of advise, don't let him/them rush you out of the drill hall. Take your time, get ALL the pictures you want (I didn't get a picture of just me and my son in his dress whites inside the hall).

...be sure to have your Navy form letter just in case, ID, and plenty of tissue for yourself and to share! Use the Illinois Street gate enterance, not the base main gate. If you want to do a dry run you may and the security guards deal with parents on a weekly basis and are very nice and informative. The METRA train station is on block past Illinois St, it's on Ohio St. and the cost of parking is 2.00 day, so if you want to avoid the car security clearance for PIR you can park at the METRA station, walk the block back to the gate to go through security.

I would recommend not driving to the base at all. My Hotel had a bus shuttle, another Mom on this site did that so I did too, The bus zooms pass the cars and drops you off at the gate. We just walked in, it was easy.
So, do most of the hotels have a shuttle to the base? Do they make sure the shuttles are running at 6:30 am? Wondering about renting a car to get from airport to hotel - but it sounds like shuttles and the Metra are the best way to go? My son's PIR is in June.
Rebecca, go to the New Moms Stop Here group. There are lots of discussions on PIR. I have seen other discussions about hotels and such. Will add to the list in the SF group when I get a chance.

Pictures are not allowed anywhere outside on the base. The shuttle drivers will confirm that cameras and camera-phones will be taken and NOT given back if you're caught taking pictures. Though I saw a lot of people doing so anyway, my son was adamant that I refrain, as HE would get the fallout too if I got caught. He was also told later of two people who had their cameras or phones taken. Take all you want inside the Hall, but beware of taking them outside!

Sit at the top of the lower level bleachers, this gives you back support (and you don't have someone breathing down your neck). Several people have suggested to sit to the left of the division number sign on the floor. The divisions don't seem to line up directly behind where the sign indicates, thus the suggestion.

May I suggest Giovanni's in chicago, it is the best, chicago fire is close to it (taste) but nothing beats Giovannis. Make sure you take longjohns and lip balm chicago's cold is very different than our cold (it is beautiful though). We were there in December and everytime I licked my lips they froze...haha.
Anyone with advice for a winter PIR. Me thinks it's a lot different than summer. :)
