I've been conversing with some OCS moms who have been very helpful and I appreciate all of the information as my LO gets ready to enter OCS on May 9th (mother's day no less).  I learned that there's a new group every 3 weeks so if I've got it right and the March 28th group is 16-10, then May 9th must be 18-10.  I'm learning so much and curious if anyone has someone starting May 9th. The date is fast approaching!!

Hi everybody! Look at the comments on the front page of OCS Moms...I didn't know what those terms were either (my LO graduated with 13-10), so I asked the group....and almost immediately one of the members chimed in with the info! This is the best thing about this site...never be afraid or embarrassed to ask a question of the group. There is a lot experience here and they could have the answer you are looking for.
Thank you. I will check it out. I hate being away from my LO. Wow! I work a lot and do a ton of things to keep busy but find myself daydreaming about him A LOT!
Thank you for your words of encouragement. I need that right now. I have been working a lot to keep my mind occupied and have a ton of things on my plate which has been good. But at night when I lay down, I just feel bummed. I am remembering the future we will have together...I am so excited because my guy is about as amazing as they come (we probably all say that). I am definitely blessed and honored to be his girl. :)
I can't believe it's been a solid week since we dropped my son off at the base in Rhode Island. I write everyday with tidbits of information, news updates, jokes, family information, etc. I wonder if he's begun receiving the letters. I remembered to date them so if he receives a stack of them, he can organize them by date! I'm wondering if I should try to guess when the graduation is because it will be peak tourist season in Newport and getting a hotel may be quite difficult!
I've been to Newport several times with friends and with family, navy blue, since I live about 5 hours away. I never could have anticipated that we'd ever go back to drop our child off to OCS. We did the Cliff Walk and absolutely loved it! I tortured my family with the mansions. I'm fascinated with them. How wealthy could these people be that these summer "cottages" were lived in for only 8 weeks of the year and these houses could fit three or four of my house into them! I really try not to think of my LO being rolled although I realize it's a possibility. I wonder what the statistics are of people being rolled per three week session! If I do make reservations, I'll make sure that the $ is refundable or can be changed to another date.
I have a son in 15-10. Only about 30% of those who started on the first day, March 7th, will graduate on May 28th. It seems like most roll and take an extra 3 to 6 weeks to finish.
Wow! That's somewhat discouraging! When they roll, do they come home? Stay there?
If they roll they go into "H" Class. I am not exactly sure what they do there. If they roll for RLP or academics they probably "class up" to the next class, which would add three weeks. If they rolled for injury or illness, of course they get healthy and build back up and when they are ready then they class up. Depending upon their health issue, that could move them back more than one class.
There is a separate H Discussion group that has more information.
Generally, 50% of a class will roll at one time or another. Besides illness, injury, and academics, they can roll by failing an inspection or physical fitness assesment, or due to a disciplinary issue. While there, they work on whatever brought them to H. Showing an attitude of doing whatever it takes to class up again can help. They don't want the OC's to enjoy being in H. That being said, there is no shame is rolling. Many OC's have stated that their stint in H has made them a better officer.

Most of us have held off on non-refundable or change-fee reservations until our LO became a Candio. While they could still roll at that time, the likelyhood of rolling drops considerably. Just a word of advice.
I just want to point out something about the numbers. I said above that only about 30% of those who start finish in 12 weeks. 15-10 began with about 102 candidates on March 7. They will graduate about 61 or 62 next week. 30 or 31 of those graduating Officers will have finished in 12 weeks. So those same 30 people are 30% of those who started on the first day, but they are half, or 50%, of the eventual graduates.
So it is a good idea to wait at least until your candidate passes RLP to make your travel arrangements. Or make sure everything is refundable.
In my son's class at the beginning of the 12 weeks, there were approximately 30 original candidates of a total of 50. About 20 had rolled-in from other classes. Approx. 14-15 of the original 30 candidates graduated in 12 weeks.
i know its easy to get discouraged but what an honor to have a son as an officer. my boyfriend rolled into h too and sounds different but positive. i'm so proud of him. in fact i think this is just what he needed. your son gs likely tired but if this is what he wants you have to hang on. its not that much longer. if you need anything i can help. we all have to build up our lo's now. :)
