My son signed an enlistment contract at MEPS.  He wanted a job doing something mechanical (his asvab scores were very high in this area) but all they had available was a Personel Specialist.  My son wants to be in the Navy so he took the job.  He doesn't think that this job would make him miserable but he would really like to work in something in the mechanical field.  He doesn't leave for BC until December.

Can he request a change prior  to BC and how does he go about this?  Will he be told about how a job change would effect the timing of his BC and will he have the option to keep the job he has or will they just make the change without giving him a choice.

Thanks for your help.

hm - jobs are scarce nowadays - even in the Navy! I am pretty sure they can change - if the other job is open to them. My son changed during boot camp - so it can be done.
Was he in BC this year?
Hi Brenda Sue
My name is Anna. My son left for BC this past monday. He signed up for hospital corpsman. How would he go about changing jobs during bootcamp?
They can only change jobs if they have an openning. It can affect when they leave to BC. I do know however it does require alot of paper work.
The best thing for him to do is sit down with is recuriter and see what jobs are open for him to take. I hate to say this but the Navy can be picky at this point everyone wants to come in. If you dont fit into what they want they don't need to take you onboard. However, if he has a high enough asvab score to do the job they can switch rates if the job rating is open that he wants. Talking to the recuriter can tell you want they have open as far as jobs and what projected jobs will be coming open as well.
Thanks for the info. He said they told him that his ASVAB scores were high enough to do anything except maybe nukes. They just didn't have any openings. I guess things are so tight with the economy that they just don't have a lot of jobs open. Anyway, the recruiter is going to come see us for the 72 hour debrief so we will talk to him then.
Thanks for telling us about the rolling DAR. We will follow up with the recruiter.
Our girl entered DEP in October '08, was offered an AE/CF rate at MEPS and accepted with a date to leave for bootcamp on 7/14/09. Afterwards, she decided that she was interested in the Nuke rate. Her recruiter was aware of her desire to change rates and when a Nuke billet opened up it was offered to her. She accepted, did all of the necessary paperwork changes and received her new date to leave for bootcamp, 10/06/09. She is now almost finished with A school.

If your sons recruiter is aware of his desire to change rates he/she can keep their eyes open for a billet opening in the rates your son desires. If one does become available and he accepts, it likely will change his leave date, he may leave sooner or later than his original date. So I would recommend that you prepare yourself for the possibility that he may leave sooner, without much notice.

Many thanks to your son for his service!
Thanks to your daughter for her service too! I hear that nukes is very challenging. I'll bet she has worked hard and it ready to be through with A school. Thanks so much for the info.
ok I have questions....first what is a rollling DAR? My daughter is a depper and at meps was offered a job as an mm (machinist mate??) she really wants to be in the navy too and did not know any other options at meps so took it.,but really has no interest in a machinist postion--and so now we are trying to find out options for her to change-but her recruiter is being less than helpful in my opinion. So i really am looking for the best solutions to help her get a job she is more suited for. As of now she is scheduled to leave for bc the end of August. and what does it mean by 'rate'. isn't every job the same as far as rank/pay?
The Navy doesn't use the word "job". The term is "rate". My rate was ET, in civilian terms, I performed the job of electronics technician. Each rate has a distinct insignia, combined with the rank insignia, it shows both rate and rank on the uniform.

Yes, they'll be the same as far as rank and pay, but some rates have programs which allow for faster advancement after successful completion of A school. I came out of ET school as an ET3, which is an E-4. Confusing until you get the hang of it.
As long as they try, hmmm?
