My son signed an enlistment contract at MEPS.  He wanted a job doing something mechanical (his asvab scores were very high in this area) but all they had available was a Personel Specialist.  My son wants to be in the Navy so he took the job.  He doesn't think that this job would make him miserable but he would really like to work in something in the mechanical field.  He doesn't leave for BC until December.

Can he request a change prior  to BC and how does he go about this?  Will he be told about how a job change would effect the timing of his BC and will he have the option to keep the job he has or will they just make the change without giving him a choice.

Thanks for your help.

So Hoppi, what is their official title when they go to BC (I am sure they are called everything under the sun)? I know in the Army and Marines it is Private (maybe this is after they pass basic).
Sounds like our kids could change jobs. My son is a PS (Personnel Specialist) and he wanted a Machinist Mate job. He isn't leaving until December though. Maybe that has something to do with the job that he was offered. Anyway, our Recruiter told us that he could put in what is called an Info DAR and that once he puts it in he might get a job change but that it could change his ship date. I think my son plans to wait about a month and then put in an info DAR and see what happens. I don't know if there is any difference between the info DAR and the rolling DAR.
Yes, i wish we could just make it that easy and switch jobs for our kiddos. She would be much happier as a PS, and I wouldn't really mind having her with me til December either. But she is talking with her recruiter so hopefully something good will be worked out. I hope your son gets what he is hoping for, too.
My son entered the DEP in Feb 2009. He accepted the job of Yoeman (YN) and was to leave for bootcamp in December. He put in for a job change with his recruiter two days later and finally received an offer in late September of information technician (IT). He only had 30 minutes to decide it he wanted it and he had to leave for bootcamp on Oct 7th. He took it and is very happy he did. He loves what he is doing. He had verbal orders for San Diego but his hard copy came through for Virginia then off to Kuwait two weeks later. I can't wait until he comes home. Keep checking with the recruiter to have him follow up on the request. Hopefully they can find a better fit for him since he will be doing it for a while.
