My son will be starting this in this  OCS class and would like to get LO connecting as we wait for the class to start in about 3 months. Then talk as we wait for graduation and make plans.

Yes, he has been on that for awhile now.
This is a difficult question to answer. The format of OCS has been undergoing some changes since last November, and the phone call situation seems to change with every class. My daughter's class was able to call on Sundays. The first call came after she was at OCS for one week, and was 2 minutes long. The first few calls were only that long, on Sundays, until they had earned privileges from their DI. Some classes did not have phone privileges for up to four weeks, and some had nightly phone privileges. After the eighth week, and they became Candidate Officers (Candios) they were able to carry their cell phones with them, but they are SO busy that communications didn't increase all that much.
What I suggest is that your daughters write to him, often. Send him drawings, newsclippings, jokes, sports scores. Keep the envelopes plain, no decorations. No glitter or confetti in the letters. No musical cards. The mail will be a bright spot in his day, and they will truly be helping their dad make it thru OCS. You may not hear back much, but send those letters!
Your husband will want to take a prepaid phone card with him, to make calls home. (not a cell phone card) The payphones aren't the best, but it is the only link home for a while. Maybe if they understand the situation before he leaves, it may be easier to get through.
So, I find this website kind of confusing. Maybe it's just me but I figured I would start a Facebook page for the family and friends of everyone starting OCS the 1st of August in class 01-11. I hope I post this link the right way so you can find the Facebook page. Here's the link: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=130879590274443 I tested it out by copying and pasting to the browser address bar and it worked for me. Hope to see everyone there and be able to get to know you before graduation. :)
Great idea with the facebook page! I am on there all day and this is a little harder to navigate. Easier to have it all in one spot!
that what I thought, come join us!!!
Just did! Can't wait, hopefully we can get more people to join!
I think it's confusing because of the way it's listed. From my short experience, the OCS classes go by the # of the class and the year of the class. So my son, who started on May 9th was in class 18 of the year 2010. Therefore, he was in 18-10. Classes start every three weeks. He hurt himself and then rolled into the next class which began May 30th and that was class 19-10. If you keep going every three weeks, the August 1st class would be 22-10. Now as I am still somewhat new to this I could be wrong but this is how it was presented to me! No matter what, however, connecting with all the moms/wives/significant others is the most important part of getting through all of this!
thanks egbot, I will check with my son but I have a feeling I think you are right, but they have started a facebook page for his class so it will be much easier for sure
Hi Ladies I will be joining this FB group today. Not sure wsho is in charge of it but.... it will be under Etasha Crawfrod-Deas. My husband is in this class. I am so glad I am finding out information now!!!!
forward message to daughter in law
hey Jenny03, I'm new to this site but familiar with facebook... my son is in the OCS class starting on August 22 (02-11) and I've requested to join your fb group to follow along with what you all are going through with your LO in the class ahead of his. I want to learn from you all who are ahead of us in this! :)
You almost have it correct. The last two digits are the Fiscal Year that the class graduates (very confusing). The Fiscal year starts Oct 1, so They will graduate Oct. 22, 2010, in Fiscal year 2011. They may actually be class 02-11. If a class begins July 11, 2010, that class will graduate Oct 1, and that would be class 01-11.
