Son leaving for boot camp in March 2011 - looking for some helpful information

Hello, I am hoping to get some information that I can pass along to my family.  My son will be leaving for boot camp on either March 8 or 11, 2011.  We are a very close & large family.  I have read where he will be able to invite 4 adults to graduation.  Since we are a large and close family I need to know how to plan - and who to plan with.  We have 11 adults and one child that is 5.  Any suggestions?  Will I need to tell 7 adults they won't be able to go?  Thank you in advance for your help.

Yes, it is four adults. He may be able to get a fellow recruit to put some on their list if it isn't full, but that's no guarantee whatsoever. All the other sailors may have four attending. Some guests who are not on the list might be able to go on standby, and be let in after all the invited guests are seated, IF there is room. Again, no guarantee.

Yes, you may have to tell seven adults they can't go. They could make the trip and spend time with him after. He may or may not have the entire weekend as liberty. Some don't as they go to their schools immediately.

The good news is you have plenty of time to learn the ropes and rules. Good luck, and thanks to him for choosing to serve.
I love Bunker Bees comment that it isn't exactly summer camp. I will have to run that one by Matt when he comes home in July for a visit. It kind of made me "chuckle". I totally understand the new families don't have a clue until there love ones leave and all these things start happening and then all the questions. I was so new to the Navy scene that I didn't even know what to ask to begin with. I just kept reading, reading and reading. And you have been a great source of honest, "tell as it is", and helpful information along with Hoppi and Mary. Thank you for that!

Welcome to N4M. Your key to adjusting is finding a group where you can feel comfortable and get answers to your questions – Click on the underlined links:
1. New Moms Stop Here group. You should think of this group as your orientation station. We do have a number of experienced members who can answer questions and point you in the right direction.
2. Depper’s… in but not yet . is a group for those just waiting for bootcamp to start (Delayed Entry Program – a depper)
3. Boot Camp Moms group. Is he/she already in bootcamp? Or just about to go in? This is the group.
4. OCS Graduate Moms or the NROTC Moms. For those going to be an officer or going to NROTC?
Read this blog to get a jump start on how to use the N4M site.
Welcome to New Members

Of particular importance is the use of the “Search” function. You should do searches in blogs, forums, discussions for answers in previously posted threads BEFORE adding a NEW blog/discussion.

Check your page (click on MY PAGE) & status box (INBOX) often.

Best of luck, BunkerBee and AbbyblueOK (from the New Moms Stop Here Group)
I would recommend concentrating on getting through bootcamp first. He is not exactly going to summer camp. One step at a time.
Debbie, even though the 7 extra people you have wont beable to attend PIR (unless they can go on standby) they should still plan on going for the weekend. Unless your son is a Grad n Go, you can all still have time together.....and there is a video available for purchase.
Thank you so much! I was thinking that's what we will do - even if a few could only see him for 5 minutes....it would mean so much!
Your son will only be able to list 4 adults (children under 12 can go in without being on the list). Those four adults will have to have proper identification to pass through the gate. The main gate will have a record of those who are on the list. I have heard of people going in with other families or waiting somewhere to see if they could possibly get in but we did not have that situation so I cannot speak for anything other than what normally happens. Also you might tell your son that when they do pictures he can order a video of the ceremony that you will have forever. It shows the entire graduation. It is not the best quality but I am so glad we have it. It comes weeks after the ceremony is over. I hope this was helpful.
