We just got back from King's Bay, GA.  What a great trip!  Since the son was working all but one day, we did some exploring.

St. Mary's is just down the road, and if you go in the summer, they set up a small market by one of the shelters.  We picked up fresh homemade sweet breads, a pie, just picked blueberries and a cooling neck tube.  Well, needless to say, the baked goods and blueberries were gobbled up by our son and his roomie!  Since I couldn't bake in a hotel room it was a great treat.

We also ate one afternoon at the best little Greek cafe in St. Mary's--think it was called RiverSide.  Think really good spinach pie and greek salad, and out of site gyros!

The guys liked eating at a wings place on Hospitality Road.  We tried to get into a restaurant called OPS, but it was packed for a fundraiser.  Smelled great with italian seasonings and the specials looked simple but good.  There's also Pepper's in a small strip mall, which had authentic Mesican food.  (Did I tell you how much we spent feeding these guys and one daughter-in-law?  They were broke having just come from Groton, and waiting for their room expenses to be reimbursed from the hotel where they had to stay while in Groton.)  We also filled their refrigerator with cold cuts, freezer pops--and their new shelving unit with canned goods.)

We got a quick public viewing of the base, but nowhere close to the docks.  Our son was awaiting the return of the USS West Virginia.  We only wish we could have had clearance to go see the boat return.

While there, we stayed at a Comfort Inn and Suites on Hospitality Rd.  Very convenient, and if you pre-paid, you got a good rate.

Carol, So glad you had fun in Kings Bay. My son Rob is on the West Virginia also. IT sounds like your son will be on the gold crew with Rob as the boat just came back with the blue crew. What is your son's job on the sub?
When we were down at the base we went to St Mary's also, it is a lovely spot. Missed thefarmers market thourh, I'll have to remember that for the next trip.
Yes--they will be on the same boat! So glad to hear from you. Our son is an MM. Andy had a 36 hr day on Sunday, so we headed back towards our airplane destination of Orlando instead of staying an extra day up there.

Will Rob be planning to go with the boat when it drydocks?
Yes he is looking forward to it I think. He hopes to be able to take some college classes while they are in VA. What is your son's name, I'll have Rob keep an eye out for him. Tell him he is the tall gangley one he is over 6'4''..How he fits in there I don't know.
My son is on the West Virginia blue crew. He came home (we only live 2 hours away near Savannah) for 10 days and now is off again with the gold crew to finish qualifying. He is an ET Com. If anyone comes out this way, my husband is a tour guide in Savannah and will be glad to take crew members and their families for a walking tour of Savannah at no charge. My daughter just married a Navy Lt. who is a Company officer at Annapolis and she is at Kings Bay now while he sends his midshipman out for training. I plan to visit her down there next week so thanks for the info!
Donna, welcom abourd so to speak. Will definately look you up when we get down that way. My husband was suppose to go out on the tiger cruz next month when they come in but the medical doc for the boat said he couldn't due to his heart condition. He was extremly disappointed but understands. Maybe next time. We hope to make it down to GA before they go to VA but it all depends on my work. I have never been to Savannah, would love to see it. Again welcome to the WV and I know your son will have a great cruz.
Paulette, How do you find out about the Tiger Cruise? My husband would love the chance to go on one. Maybe since our son is new he can't do it. Do you know how I can get in touch with the ombudsman for the gold crew? Thanks for any info.
Hi Donna; The tiger cruise was anounced in Early May I think, it islike a lottery as thy can not take everyonede to space limitations. It would have ben nice if they had told Rob of the medical requirenments so he wopuldn'thave put his dad in but live andlearn. Our family doctor is retired Navy and he said that the condition Earl has shold not be a fator so maybe for the next one it will work out.
I'll send you a PM for the ombudsman info I don't think they want al of that on this site. Her name is Ashley and she i a doll. I was worried that I would miss getting a ackage to Rob before they sailed as he was workin 12 hr days an missin he post offic bing open. So I contacted her and she said to hae it sent to their house and she ook it to him. such sevice. i really want to meet her when we come down there.
So accept me as a friend and I'll pm her contact information.
Did your son give yu the e-mail contact fr te sub? Let me knowand I'll send hat also.
Have a great evening

My hubby will be reporting to the USS WV soon :) Good to know places around King's Bay to get a good bite to eat!
