Hi everyone,

I am looking at joining the Navy and I am very interested in becoming a vocalist for the USNB. Has anyone been a part of a Naval Band? Does anyone know anything about what it's like or how many vocalists they accept? Any and all information about being a musician in the USNB will be MUCH appreciated! :)

Thanks!

Chelsea

I can tell you what NOT to do ... do not join the Navy as something else and plan to change rates later. My ex-husband did this, very talented singer, but he didn't want to wait or go through the audition process. He went in as an electronics technician, and after his six years, separated as an electronics technician.
Don't know if this will help, I found it on google: http://www.persnet.navy.mil/CommandSupport/NavyMusic/JobOpportunities/
I know if they find out you play an instrument you get put in a division ending in 9, the musicians at boot camp. you will march and play your instrument and will play for anything the fellow recruits have to sing to. and for marching in to the graduating ceremony. I'm not sure about vocalists.
Ask your recruit officer?
Juliet, that is a performing division for boot camp only. The Navy Band is a rate itself, and hard to get into.
well chelsea i have no idea about be a vocalist but my husband enjoy on the navy to be a piano player and at the time he enjoy they don't hav nothing so was tranfer to a carrie until they can call him again and do the test for the band them they say he need play three different instrument and them with the job on the carrie he hav no time at all to do the test cause the command don't gave permission for it so if u want be on the band be sure first they will put u from the begining on the band well good luck to u
Hi Chelsea!

My husband is in one of the Navy bands. It's a great career. Here is the Navy Personnel Command website that tells you all about the Navy music program: http://www.npc.navy.mil/commandsupport/navymusic. Each band has at least 1 or 2 vocalists. It's good to be able to sing with the jazz band, rock band, and whatever else they need, such as singing the National Anthem by yourself, etc. As a vocalist, you usually have to play a percussion instrument with the marching band, but they'll teach you that at A school if you don't have any experience with it. If there's anything else I can help you with, send me a message. Good luck!

Elizabeth
