Advice on how and what to mail my SeaBee son in Afghan

Hi Navy Family,
I need help with how and what items to be sent to my Son in Afghanistan.  Can you please advise me as to what is the best way and best things to send over. My Son said it's 127 in the shade....OMG!!! I feel for our wonderful military enduring so much. Dear God, please watch over them all and give them the strength to do the job set before them.
Thank you all for your needed advice.

Wow 127!!!!! Have you checked out the group Molly's Adopt a Sailor? click here to find it -

Last month we "adopted" some SeaBees in Afghanistan - not sure if it was your son's group or not. But there are several suggestions of things to send. I have even made fruit pies in canning jars (so they sealed when they were baking) and sent them overseas. Also, we make cooler wraps to help in the heat. I hear they like the metal canisters to hold water - they don't crack like plastic ones do. and. . . the packets to flavor bottled water.
The only way to ship to a FPO or APO address is through the post office, you can use the flat rate boxes that are 12.50 per box to ship, they are free at the PO. If you have larger things to ship you have to use a plain box, not a reused box with writing on it, Walmart and Target have them. The best size when shipping bigger boxes is 10x12, bigger than that and it gets really expensive. I send any heavy things (shampoo, body wash, hygeine items in the flat rate box because its cheaper) then lighter things like socks and tshirts, snacks, in other boxes. Dont mix snacks with hygiene items, food does pick up the scents, if you send anything that can spill (shampoo, toothpaste etc) double bag it before you ship it. There are so many things they cannot get overthere, and with him being a seabee, he is probably working on building a new base so its even harder. They love to get socks, (cant get them over there) love American snacks, magazines, local newspapers, pillows, sheets (if he is in a bed vs cots) candy, (not chocolate) body powder, foot powder, inserts for boots, new razors, deodorant, those 3 in 1 laundry sheets are great to send. If you do send a larger box and not in too much of a rush, use parcel post at the PO, it takes a little longer but can be about 20.00 cheaper per box. You will need to fill out a customs form, but they are not difficult, you can get them when you get your boxes at the PO. Some bases dont have easy access to water or showers, so a lot of them request baby wipes, with the sand and heat, they are always using them. Cant ship aresols, or anything with alchohol (rubbing or drinking kind) nothing with contents underpressure.
They suggest you dont send homemade food due to the possiblity of tampering with the packages but that is your choice. Hope this helps, I will keep your son in my thoughts with all our deployed troops for his quick and safe return to his home.
