OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Tiger Cruise - 2008 version
okay, this is a teaser and this is how it worked in 2008:
sailor will get you information about 2 months prior.
you will have to fill out a medical information sheet.
who can go: parents and children of the sailor. Then their siblings, extended family and even friends if there is room. number? don't know
spouse: navy doesn't want relations on the ship. it is still a functional ship 24/7. No distractions of that sort.
cost: $105, paid to the ship, to help defray the cost of food and for the souveniors-which are wonderful. Your cost to fly to Hawaii or whatever port you'd get on. Any expenses while there. No need for money on the ship, unless you want to buy something in the store. It's a pretty ordinary store, but I did get a Lincoln shirt there.
where to board: we boarded in Hawaii
where do you sleep: no, there aren't guest quarters (I asked). you sleep in the berthings or where your sailor does if same sex.
how is that possible: sailors leave the ship in Hawaii for leave or to go back ahead of the squadron.
details as I have time. And the picture is my famous one! haha. Yes, I was asleep in the ready room. My husband took this one, but I fell asleep another time, woke up to an officer taking my photo. I asked if was going to be a dart board back in VA. They laughed their heads off.

One question, if Mommas go, where do we sleep if our Sailor is a Son? What is a berthing? Not so good on this lingo yet, bu getting there!

You have a female sponser and are berthed with them......last time they had a whole area for female Tigers....not sure how it will work this time. Berth is an area of the ship....they are numbered and lettered for those of us who still get lost.

I was in with my son's squadron and some other squadrons. They tend to keep them together. And of course sailors.

Berthing is the large room where the sailors sleep. Then the room is broken into "cubes" which are really rectangles, haha. Usually, about 150 per berthing and 6 to a cube. 3 racks on each side of a narrow asile, the length of the rack. VERY tight quarters.
Tell your son to make f riends with a female in his shop if possible. That's what my son did and she was a co-sponsor. She has to agree to get you to the berthing, explain the rules, show you the head, and where to meet your son. That's about it.
Mine was great. Had my bed made up for me when I got on board.
I promise, I'll detail this alittle more.

I went on the day crusie.....I sent my youngest child to Hawaii to meet his brother when they got home and he sailed home with the ship and his Brother to Everett. It was the most amazing experience to spend time onboard.... I would encourage any of those who can, to do this. Ask your sailor now and remind DS to look for information as the deployment comes to an end . The experience is a once in a lifetime thing!!!

I agree. Do it. start saving now for it.
the beds are called "racks" or coffin racks, cause they are real narrow and about 18" high. Unless you are on the top, then it is open to the ceiling.
There are navy blue curtains that you can close for more privacy and a light in each one. During sleep hours 10 am to 6 pm and 10 pm to 6 am, there are red lights on in the berthings. -

What are the red lights for? IS it like a warning SHHHHHHH people are sleeping? I really think I would like to talk to my Sailor about doing this Tiger Cruise... Originally I wasn't going to mention it to her, because I talked her into asking her Dad but he isn't exactly jumping for joy to get involved, SO...... I think I just might ask her about it.

exactly. You can see pretty good in the red lights, but they aren't invasive to sleep. If you need to go back to the berthing, you have to be real quiet.
We were given little back packs and I packed for the day at 5:30 am. I got up at 4 am cause I wanted to beat the sailors to the shower. the head next to my berthing was pretty small and I didn't want to be in there way.
The racks are really heavy to lift and I had a bottom one. I went back once and regretted it. I would prop the bed part on my right forearm as it came down, to slow it down, and it was all bruised up.
Actually, I came home all bruised up. The ship is steel and doesn't give. haha.
Charlotte, I can't recommend it enough. Talk to your daughter. My hubby stayed in my son's cube and he loved it. You would get to stay with your daughter and if someone isn't leaving from her cube, maybe a sailor would move to another cube in the berthing so you could.
You would be on the same schedule as she is. although, I do believe if the sailor works nights, they swap to days to be with you. but Ben went to work at 6:30 am so we went too.
Kim, Ben got someone in his squadron to co-sponsor me. I slept in her cube. She was responsible for showing me all the berthing things and the heads near by. But then I was Ben's responsibility.
I would do it again in a heartbeat, but alas, my son will be out of the navy by that time. I tell everyone that I took the ultimate cruise.
I refused to go on a cruise prior to this (knew about it since 2-2006 and I waited until 10-2008 to got to do it) because I am not crazy for the water. I was afraid that if a regular cruise was a bad experience I wouldn't get on the Lincoln.
And honestly, if I only ever get to take 1 cruise in my lifetime, I am so happy that it was a Tiger Cruise. -
