HI everyone

My hubby is getting very homesick and I thought some of my homemade goodies would help to cheer him up... I have never mailed cookies before on his deployments. I was wondering if anyone had tips on the best type to mail and also any packing tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I would love to send my son some of my homemade cookies, like I did when he when in boot camp, because he loved them! But I am so afraid of the shipping--that they might melt or something along the way--and I don't have a vacuum sealer or anything. So I just bought the little "Anna's" Thins that are cookies that are in small packages, sealed up nice and tight, with I suppose a certain amount of preservatives, but no trans fats, so not too bad for you ('cause my baby is always battling that beast!). Fortunately he has taken his boredom out on the gym, lately, and is working out up to three times daily! I'm so proud of him! So it may be a good thing that I not send him my homemade double-chocolate-chip-chunk yum-yum cookies, huh? Lol! "Thins" sound better! *grins*
cindy... I had done something similar sent some really good store bought cookies that were already sealed too but hubby is missing the home cooking so gonna try to ship homemade ones and keep my fingers crossed...lol i found a website w/great packing tips and also recipes that were the best to ship.....
I under baked them and put them in ziplock containers wrapped in wax paper. My brother got the cookies and said that he couldn't believe that they were so soft. It took about two weeks for them to get there. Underbaking the cookies keep them from getting hard in the heat...Found that suggestion on the internet from a site that bakes cookies for military all the time. Good Luck
WOW Hollie I think I will try that. I never would have thought of that. Although come to think of it my son loves cookie dough.. he likes cookie dough ice cream and straight out of the freezer. I bet he would like that.
Every week I send my husband all sorts of baked goodies.. I package the different kinds in there own bags and then seal a meal them, they always arrive to him moist and in one piece. Ive sent them before with out seal a mealing them and they ended up being hard and broken so I would definetly invest in a sealing machine. IF you want to send cupcakes I recommend freezing them un frosted then seal a mealing the frozen cakes and sending them wit ha can of frosting so they can apply it on the ship, so it wont melt or make a huge mess in transit.. :) Hope this helps a little!! ALmost half way thru :))
thank you so much for the tips I will definetly get one of those sealing machines... gonna bake this weekend its been so hot here I havent wanted to turn the oven on...lol
I love your name
Walmart has one for I believe 42$ or around that price for one of the actual bag sealer ones. ITs been the same way here in Norfolk, Hubbys hollarin he needs brownies Im hollarin im not trying to bake my self!! lol Thank you :) its unique and beyond true!!
I have tried this...however I kept some at home and tried it two weeks later. The cake was bad. By the time I spoke with my son he said that it had a funny taste but they drowned it with the icing...not his favorite.

How do you get it to stay fresh...maybe I am missing a step. I tried the pie in a jar...I have several stored in the freezer. I just pop them in the oven when I am ready for a snack. I haven't cook them or tried a couple weeks later, yet. I m worried that they would go bad too. I think I will just to see if they go bad. It takes roughly about 4-6 weeks for a package to arrive on the ship that can definitely be the issue. Where when on land he got his packages with in 2 weeks
That could be an issue then....my son gets his packages in about a month from Texas. It takes them less than a week to get to Virginia but 3 weeks to get out at sea. lol, go figure.
I have the pies and love them. They are a perfect snack..plus everyone gets what they like :-) I have also made lil mini pot pies (chicken). I make them early and pop them in the oven for lunch; my son has ate them after school. It tides him over til dinner... *Sigh** I think...lol
thank you so much for posting this. I baked 2 batches last weekend to send to my son for his Birthday in a week and they turned out great!!!!! Can't wait until he gets them. I was truly amazed just how simple it was.
this is what has worked for me. using bread keeps it fresh learned it from my aunt who sent it to hubby at sea
I send my son homemade cookies on a regular basis. This is his 2nd deployment so I know from his first one what worked well. I send him his favorite... choc chip cookies and place them in a zip lock bag and he loves it every time he gets them. You don't have to put them in containers or anything else other than the zip lock bags. I found that 1 large zip lock bag actually holds an entire batch of cookies. To look at the bag you wouldn't think it would hold that much but it does.

sotwom21.. thank you so much for posting the info on baking a cake in a jar. My sons birthday is this month and I would love to be able to send him some sort of birthday cake to try and make it a little special for him.
