Lisa, I finally realized that my son is doing what he loves to do. HOW AWESOME IS THAT. Yes, he left me today for about 2 years. Darlin, I am a cryer. I slobber because I am happy. But I realized this time when he was home he is awesome and he is doing what his heart has called him to do. My Sailor did not "settle for some burger flippin job" (no offense to anyone). For the first time he left without me clinging to his neck and crying. They hate that. I felt AWESOME. I AM A SAILORS MOTHER AND PROUD. Sniff sniff. OK , I am back now. Those of us that have Sailors that we love find a PEACE that is the knowledge that we are so loved by our Sailors that they are willing to leave us so they can defend us.
I think I have rambled enough. But I hope what I said will help a family member out there.

My son, Doug, is a Machinist Mate on the USS Albuquerque. Is there anyone else out there?
Deb from MI, it's been quite a while after your post, but in case your son is still on the USS Albuquerque, please pass along thanks to the crew for any help extended to the ROTC midshipmen who recently sailed for about twelve days in August 2010 with them. My MIDN 2/C son enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions and explore life onboard a submarine. --Rose
oh lee, that is an awesome surprise!!!!! i know how over joyed you are. lots of TLC and have a great time!
Our son, Michael is just recently assigned to the USS Buffalo after shore duty in Japan. He's glad to be back on board a boat. His first boat was the USS Los Angeles.
My son, Couri is a ET on the USS Ohio/Blue, out of Bangor, WA. He will be on his 3 rotation, leaving again in May for about 6 months, then home for sometime to welcome a new baby. We are praying he makes E-6 this Sept.
My son wil be on the USS Memphis in Groton Ct.Joining May 1, 2009 Navigation/Sonar
Kaye , is there more than one chief on the subs?
Wow, Terrie, I just now saw this post! (You probably thought I was being "snooty!")

Yes, there is more than one Chief. Remember that "Chief" is one rank on the way to becoming a "Master Chief" (of which there are ALSO more than one on a boat). So, there's a Chief over the missile techs, another over the sonar techs, another over the mechanics, etc., etc.

HOWEVER, there is only one CHIEF OF THE BOAT (the famous/infamous "COB!") He is the top ENLISTED man on the boat. Basically, the Captain/Commander has two men through whom he issues orders: (1) the "XO" or the Executive Officer, who ranks over the other officers on the boat and (2) the COB, who ranks over the enlisted men.
My son just graduated sub school and has been assigned to the USS Dallas. He is a CS.
Does anyone have a son on the USS Greensville??
My son is on the USS Oklahoma City, currently in Portsmouth, NH.
