We have committed to sending a weekly care package to my brother-in-law who will be deploying to Afghanistan for 1 year.  Does anyone have ideas for things the guys over there regularly request in care packages?  Also, anyone have tips for the packaging and shipping?

Much appreciate any advice.

Magazines can be great to share... and they do share their packages.
Go to the group "care package ideas". There are lots of good ideas. Do make sure you order the boxes from the USPS. They will deliver them directly to your house. Have fun with your boxes!!
The USPS boxes are marked APO/FPO and are for military use only. That way when you take the box to the post office you'll get a $2 discount....I think it's about $12.50 for up to 70 lbs. I sent for 10, accidentally doubled the order and was expecting 20 and they sent me 25! All for free. My son's aboard ship and wants coffee, oatmeal and peanut butter.
They are always looking for anything with protein, such as beef jerky, tuna packets, summer sausage. Also because there are so many overthere its difficult to keep the PX/NEX stocked adequately , so any hygiene stuff is always welcome. New socks, foot powder, boot inserts, anything to help keep their feet healthy.Razor blade refills, shaving cream, Local newspapers to keep up with current events. Some even ask for new pillows and sheets for their beds, it gets old sleeping in a sleeping bag for a long time. A lot of great suggestions below too. Just a hint, do not ship food in the same box as hygiene items, the food picks up the scents. Motto is "if it can leak or spill it will" so double bag anything that can spill or leak, (dollar store has great ziploc bags) The boxes take a lot of abuse, best if things dont move around inside them.
Great information! I appreciate everyones suggestions and ideas.
I usually ask my son what he needs or he emails me and lets me know.. He's on his 3rd deployment so I have a good idea what is needed.. I do like sending fun things that make him laugh.. He loves the Pez candies.. not dispensers.. so when I am in line at the store I get him hello kitty, batman type dispensers.. Last deployment his cousins who are very young got him the Disney Princess pez collection.. LOL I have sent games like Candyland, Chutes and Ladders which the guys loved. During the holidays I would go through walmart and pick up those little silly candy dispensers.. Last year he was gone at christmas so I sent him the Reindeer poop dispenser.. complete with chocolate jelly beans.. I sent frisbee's, paddle ball games.. anything they can have fun with..
