My son leaves for bootcamp next week.  I am soooooooooo upset.  I was wondering how many others have children that have a college degree and enlisted?   My son is going into Nuke.  I am hoping to hear success stories!  Please share with me....

I knew plenty of enlisted people who had degrees in the Navy; a few were my roommates. They didn't want to "fly a desk" as one said. Not everyone wants to do what officers do, some people prefer the hands on nature of enlisted work. He will get an amazing education on top of what he already has, and amazing opportunities. He can apply for officer programs if he wants to do so later on. As a civilian, he can assuredly find work with his knowledge and skills.

LOL, my hubby (who was also enlisted) says, "Some of us want to work for a living." (ducks and hopes everyone has a sense of humor)

But seriously, why don't you consider an enlisted naval career a success? My dad served 29 years and was a Master Chief, my husband served 20 years, I served nine, my nephew is in nuke prototype now. All enlisted, all happy with our service to our country, our educations and our lives. Do you consider an officer as "better" than an enlisted service member? Officers paid more, they're in charge, but that doesn't mean they're more successful or more respected.
Thanks so much for the reply. I am not sure I don't consider an enlisted naval career a success..just always thought that with a degree..one would be an officer. Guess I watched and Officer and a Gentlman to much? LOL.
I don't consider the officer as 'better' but..my son has demonstrated his strong leadership skills in all the jobs he had in HS and in college so far so...I worry I guess. I do believe the success and respect can be in either position. My main issue is, I just don't want him to go. Wish I understood WHY he has always wanted to go. When I sent him off to college..it was easy...pack his new bedding up, etc...and sent him off to party..ohhhhhh and I knew we could talk any time...now..its a bit different. I will just miss him madly. I know all Mom's do so was just looking for support and comfort so thanks sooooooooo much for responding.
Sending your son off to College is just a bit different. But, after A school you are able to talk to him. Just seeing him will be longer between times., and not for very long lenghts. It is hard I agree......I still miss my son who left 3 years ago. We do see him often and talk alot but it is just not the same! So I do know your concerns...
my son will be graduating 09/24/10 from bootcamp. he is a music major. he taught for one year and decided to be in the Navy BAND AND REALLY LIKES IT.He said he had dreamed of playing in abig band and performing. he has got his wish, but i miss him really bad. Will see him in one week.i am going to kiss him all over his face. ha ha. he is my baby!!!!!! i am his mom
.
Finally, I see someone who is going to be in the Navy band. My son has music background also, he is currently in a Drum & Bugle Corp.
He has applied to the US Coast Guard, but our friend who is retired from the Navy wants him to go into the Navy, he said with his music background he could possibly be in the Navy Drum & Bugle Corp.
Any info?? would be welcome.
Very well put Anti M..we have Officers in our family that went to college first..we have Officers that went enlisted to Officer..we have college kids who went enlisted and stayed enlisted..
Depends on what you want...
My nephew says the re-enlistment bonus for EM nukes is sitting at $75K this year.
Sweet! He got a great bonus and is going in E3 versus E1 since he has the degree. He says if he loves it..he's staying sooooooooooo someday....he may get that re-enlistment bonus...lol.
Emma! You are so right...many of his friends are unemployed or aren't all that happy in their jobs. I just wish he woulda went to Grad. School versus the Navy but..what do I know?????????? Thanks so much for responding...

The Navy is so much more interesting than Grad school. Yes, I have a degree or two, but the Navy was far more fun. ; )
Same here all of my sons friends will have a hard time paying off there loans and finding a job,Its one of the reasons I love the Navy .I know he has a job and is not in debt like all his other friends. That was a large concern for me and my husband .
My son had a college degree but wanted to be a Rescue Swimmer and for that he had to go enlisted. He got a nice bonus and came out of boot as an E-3. He's been in slightly over 2 years and is an E-5 already. He's on deployment right now but when he gets home he's probably going to go the officer route. One of his theories is that if you're an enlistee first, when you become an officer your men will have more respect for you because they know you've been through everything they have. He's 32 so he only has so many more years to jump out of helicopters into raging oceans. Time to steer a different course.
