My husband is relatively new to the Navy and I have not moved to join him yet.  I am really excited to be going to see him where he is stationed at Pearl Harbor in October.  I have a reservation to stay at the Navy Lodge on Ford Island.  This will be my first trip to Hawaii.  I usually just take a cab from the airport to wherever I am staying.  I know that usually the taxi's cannot enter the military base.  I am wondering if I would be better off to rent a car for my visit or if there is an easy way to get around from the gate to the Navy Lodge and from the Navy Lodge to other places on base.  I don't mind walking around on base either, but not sure how far the distance is from the lodge to say the NEX.  Is there a shuttle to get around on base?  Just trying to be prepared so the visit goes smoothly. I have the flight and the lodge reserved.   Thanks for all the help with this.

Hope you don't mind if I eavesdrop on the information you receive. Our son just arrived in Hawaii a month ago. Due to his deployment we probably won't be able to visit him until late spring. Hope you have a wonderful time!!!
Wish I could help...our son is at K Bay on the east side of Oahu...not near Pearl at all.
Have a wonderful time visiting your sweetie!!
sschick- Some cabs can go on base, some cannot. When you call, or go to the taxi stand just tell them you need to go on base and you will get one that can enter. The NEX has a shuttle that runs on the main base and to the NEX. Twice a day it goes to Ford Island, there is a stop right outside the lobby of the Navy Lodge. I want to say the times are 1030 and 1630, but that could be way off. For sure it is once before lunch and once before dinner. When you are on the Pearl Harbor side, the city transit has stops over there and you can go anywhere on Oahu with it. "The Bus" schedules can be found online.
To rent a car or not......depends on what you plan on doing while you are here. You can get a compact car fairly inexpensive and as long as you have military/dependent ID and your name is on the rental contract you can go on and off base as you please.
Me...I'd rent the car, I hate being held to someone else's schedule. The walk across the bridge from Ford Island and to Pearl Harbor takes 60-75 minutes.
There is a thread on here with a ton of links for things to do. Ideally, most of your trip should be planned prior to getting here. Enjoy the islands.
thank you for all the information :) I am very excited. I believe that I will rent a car at the airport. I do have the military id card so that should work. I think that will take the stress out of getting around. I was just concerned about finding my way around (even from the airport to the base) since this is my first visit. He is on the Port Royal, so sounds like that a rental car is our only option for both getting him to work every day while I'm visiting and getting us around to see the sites. Thanks again.
I would also recommend renting a car. A taxi can be very expensive. It is about $40 just to get you from Pearl Harbor to Waikiki. You can also rent a car from the enterprise on base. I am not sure but it may be tax free from there. It is right beside McDonalds on Pearl, in fact if your situation allows it then he might could just rent one to pick you up from the airport. My friend's husband is on that ship as well.
You just need to make sure that if both of you intend to drive on and off base (by yourself), you will need to add both of you as drivers which will be an additional charge. The driver's name has to be on the contract.
I was in Oahu, just this past July....... I was lucky my son took leave and he has a car so I did not have to rent one......but if I were you, I would probably rent a car if you can, would make it much easier.
The first day I was there, he did have to work and we took the bus off Ford Island to the Nex and just had him pick us up there after he got off work, so that worked out good, the rest of my stay he was with us.
You are going to love HI, there is so much to see and do.......the scenery if beautiful. Have fun.
