Yes it will be cold. It was rainy and cold when my son graduated the end of Oct 7 years ago. It was ok during the day a light lined coat will be ok but if you go out at night better put a sweater under the coat. I went down to Chicago to visit my brother who was living there at the time and we went out to visit one of his places to go to and I left my coat in the car (one less thing to keep track of) and when we came back out the cold cut right though me. One of the aspects of seeing the grads coming in when it is raining they are all wearing the same coat and all look alike they file in in order of height tallest first and the tallest also are standing in front when they are in formation for the ceremony . Take a good camera one that has a good telescopic lens I had a disposable one and was sorry later. I could not even get good pix of the band and they were nearer. Either buy or borrow one that has a good lens.
Thank you so very much!
Any time
what is the best time to arrive @ graduation? first come first served for the seating, i assume...............
Hello! not sure on the time but someone also suggested taking a taxi to the event so you can be dropped off in front and don't have to deal with parking.
Most hotels have a shuttle to and from the base. They drop you off at the gate for check in. After you get in the gate you have the option of walking (not a good idea) or boarding a bus which drops you off in front of the building.
The above reply is for both Ryboy'sMom and granddoggy The shuttles pick you up with plenty of time to get checked in also you should know the basic info from your son or daughter what the section numbers are for you to sit your section will be directly across from the group your child in in.
My son graduated in May. The ceremony is indoors in a huge building. Get there plenty early for good seats. The longest wait in line was with the traffic on the street, trying to get on to the base. Some of the parking areas were quite a hike from the ceremony location. We also had to wait in line outside the building and it was drizzling. Once we got inside we were a half hour early and ended up in the upper section with a not-so-good view on an angle. Also the sound bounced around so much that it was very difficult to hear.

We live in nearby Wisconsin and the weather can change hourly! Watch the weather report. It can be snowing or it can be 60 degrees. There will probably be a lake breeze. Dress in layers to be safe.

It was an impressive ceremony, especially when over 1000 sailors marched in! They very much look alike. Even though we knew our son would be in the second row on the end, when they marched in we couldn't find him in the crowd. They do have a big screen that helps. The telescopic lens recommended by Gwen B is a great idea!
I'm so glad I found you all. Lot's of great, helpful information. Thank you so very much!!!!!
Oh wow, how did you know where he would be?
He was able to call us after they practiced. They were announcing the groups as they entered the ceremony but we were in a bad location for sound, near the corner on the upper level.
The traffic is one good reason to use the shuttle bus from the hotel. If you do take your car you should have or will receive the necessary info, Again traffic traffic traffic. I was glad that the hotel had the shuttle. The shuttle is not associated with the base but with the hotel. You may have to wait for the second or third trip with the shuttle as remember your sailor will (hopefully) be with you going back to the hotel.
