Do all the hotels near RTC (boot camp) have shuttles that'll take you to PIR?? My husbands PIR is Sept 24th. I'm looking around trying to get a good deal on a flight and hotel and possibly a rental car but i'm not for sure about the car yet.

Thanks!

My son's PIR is also 11/24/2010. I have booked a room at the Waukegan Marriott Springhill Suites on line using AAA for $80 a night. This hotel is suppose to be a little less than 3 miles from the base. It is pretty new, only about 3 years old and includes breakfast. They have a shuttle service that will take you to and from graduation for $3 each way (reserve at check in). I have called them directly to ask several questions and they have been very friendly and informative.
Hi..my son's PIR is 12/17/10..maybe. I am looking at the Springhill also. Did you book after you knew your PIR for sure? if so, I will wait, but I am worried as our supposed date is so close to the holidays. Any info is helpful!! :-)
Thanks for your help,
Nancy
I booked the hotel before I was absolutely sure of the PIR as it could be cancelled or changed without any penalty. I did wait to book airfare. If you are at all worried I would go ahead and book hotel ahead of time.
That's my concern too - Thanksgiving weekend - the most traveled weekend of the year. I wanted to get a package deal on Priceline, but it's not really refundable or changeable without considerable cost so I guess I'll have to book everything separately for the peace of mind of being able to cancel. Google "hotels near navy training center" or something like that and you'll get a whole list of hotels in the area.
Did your son leave enter boot camp 10/25? Mine did and had hoped his PIR woudl be 12/17 but am hearing now it might be 8 weeks PLUS the 3 days processing for a total fo 9 weeks or 12/24 PIR. Can't imagine they would have PIR on Christmas Eve. Flights would sure be expensive...
I just booked the Springhill Suites near PIR and the rate was good and the hotel is new and non-smoking. Came as a recommendation from another Navy Mom who was there for PIR a couple of months ago. After going to the website, I think it will be perfect;) I think we are going to rent a car and go into Chicago one or two days while there.
How do we get the EZ Pass? Is that through the hotel? or something I have to arrange ahead of time? Sorry, I'm new to toll booths. Also, can I bring my GPS on the plane?
EZ PASS INFO In Illinois they are called I PASS. I purchased mine at a gas station along the tollway. They have a website. www.getipass.com. Their phone # is 1-800-UC-IPASS (1-800-824-7277).

Or you can rent one with your rental car
Yes, you can bring your GPS on the plane....google addresses before you leave ...RTC, your hotel, the airport, Navy Pier, restaurants you want to go to, etc
Thanks for all the info. This is so overwhelming!
You will want a car just to get around. Stuff is not close by. You can take the public transportation into Chicago, but you will really want a car to do other stuff with your sailor like go to the mall, etc.
I am SO glad that I found this forum. I don't know my son's PIR yet.
I use a wheelchair. Does anyone know if these shuttles tthat have been mentioned are wheelchair accessible? I will have my manual wheelchair. We live in AZ, so I am not crazy about renting a car and finding our way around ( although I do have a GPS).

Thanx In Advance!
Tracy
