Choose your Username.  For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either).  Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username.  While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups!  Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself!  Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Hello everyone,

My daughter leaves for bootcamp November 9th.  This will be the first time she won't be home for the holidays.  I was just wondering what happens during Thanksgiving and Christmas???

They will start receiving mail in their second week or so. Send it as soon as you have an address. Be very careful when you address the envelope to follow the address exactly, there's a ton of mail processed. If you get two addresses, don't worry, one is the "ship" address, one is the street address, they are essentially the same.

You can put the last four digits of her SSN behind her name, it helps if another recruit has a similar name. You might think that wouldn't happen, but you'd be surprised. It also helps if you send mail near the end of BC, it will follow her and the last four are extremely useful in tracking her to her A school.

thanks for the heads up on stocking up on cards now. my son will be going in 12/14 and this will be 1st Christmas isolated "as the term goes" while at boot camp, he shows indiference now about being gone for holidays... am sure i will take it harder then he but sooooooooo proud of his decision for Navy training..but want to let him know he will always and still be in my heart and home even though gone away
They keep them pretty busy in BC, most of the time the recruits aren't thinking about home; but there are always quiet moments when time and spirit drag. He'll be fine, just know there will be at least one "what did I do?!" cry out to mom.
My son is also leaving 12/14. We'll have to stay in touch and commisserate.

My son is also leaving on 12/14 from Harrisburg PA to Chocago. I know what you mean about him being indiferent about the holidays. Of course we as moms will take it harder than anyone else. but i know they are going to be alright. im very proud of my son.
My son just left for bootcamp and this is our 1st time ever being apart. 1st of all this is the hardest thing I have ever done; I thought giving Birth was hard it was easy compared to this. I saw this on the site and went out and bought him card to keep in uplifted with just plain white envelopes. I will also look in to the PIR store for my son will be sent right away to school; so this will come in handy for him. I really have no one in my personal life that has gone through this like me or with me. When I saw this site and I read some of the things on it then I joined or requested to join.

Did your daughter arrive last night? I got that 32 sec phone call that she was finally at BC. She sounded very tired. It's hard enough coming from Alaska to the East coast on a regular trip but this one kept her in the airport for the last two days.
I'm sure they will do fine.

How does the Adopt a Sailor thing work then? I mean, if they are "adopted" then they could make a call home right?

My daughter will be in BC over Thanksgiving, but I haven't gotten her PIR letter yet, She left on the 6th so I"m hoping I get it soon.


The RDC's sign up for this right? Is being an RDC not voluntary? I mean, that sounds like a childish attitude. Don't they know what they are in for when they get this job? Their job is to train recruits - not punish them because they don't get to spend time with their family. Heck, the recruits don't either. At least the RDC gets to see their family...

Sorry - missing my daughter alot and hearing that just kind of set me off LOL.

I don't know if the adopt a sailor is still in effect, I think so, but I can't find the details online. I will keep looking. I bet she might be able to sneak in a call. I don't want to say for certain unless I can find better info. They might be adopted as a group, which makes the chances slimmer.

The RDCs are only human. They do an excellent job for the most part, but wouldn't you get tired too? I know some days they spend up to twenty hours with their recruits, and there is not a lot of normalcy in their lives. Throw in a dozen or more silly singing holiday cards when you'd rather be at home and even a saint might be ill-tempered.

I can see why it seems mean of the RDCs. But really, they care a great deal about their recruits.
They do still do this, there was an application on the blog page a few weeks ago for families who want to sign up.
