We dropped Ricky off at recruiters office at 900am.  I tried not to cry in front of him.  He is so excited.  I am glad he kept his cel phone with him b/c I have been getting texts from him. His recruiter said I can call him in a couple of days to get his address.  If it isn't in the computer don't get upset b/c they are still processing in bc.  We live in FL and he forgot his hoodie, he is going to freeze in Chicago tomorrow when he arrives.  He would not let me stop and buy him one.  Told me stop worrying.  HA like that is going to happen.
My prayers to rest of the moms this week having to let their babies reach for their dreams! This is much harder than I though it would be.

Hi! I live in Slapout, Alabama. My son is still in the swearing-in phase, but his best friend leaves tomorrow morning, early. I had to smile when I saw the part about the hoodie. I think they'll issue all the clothing he needs, but I can relate to what you mean. Alabamians are not used to "Lake effects" weather either. Since my 22-yr-old "baby" will be a couple of months behind yours, I'll be looking for your posts so we will know what to expect. Keep smiling.
Good news for me, just got text that he did bring his hoodie, so at least in the airport and in route he won't freeze. He has very thin blood. His father kept teasing him, he is in for the shock of his life with cold. He has never been in the brutal cold. He is looking forward to seeing snow! he as seen it before but never lived in it to know what a royal pain it is.
He's in for a real treat with the snow! We're from northern Middle Tennessee and we had ice and snow on the ground when mine left last winter. He arrived in GL on 2/10. They had to shovel snow from the sidewalks every day. Not to worry too much though, they are issued some serious cold weather gear! Mine actually slept in his PT sweats every night on top of the covers. he said he learned to go to sleep and not move, that way it wasn't too hard to make his rack, the bed was already made, he just had to "tighten things up".
My son arrived at great lakes oct 28th for boot camp. And i have yet to hear from him :( was told wed get a call when he gets there to let us know he was ok..but the call never came..we know hes there but would have been nice to hear his voice.
Hopin he got a chance to write us yesterday..
Very proud and thankful to all that chose to serve our country!
candih6 DId he have an activated calling card? If not then that most likely is why he didn't call. Often too there are very long lines at the payphone so many bypass the call.

You won't get a real letter for a couple of weeks and he won't get any mail for that length of time.

You'll get your "kid in a box" in a week or so via FedEx, it will be followed or will follow the form letter...this will come via USPS and will have his address, ship, division, grad date and info, password for gatepass (do not lose) and a few lines from him.

You should be able to get his temporary address from the recruiter 72 hours after he left.

He'll get a call home in 3 or 4 weeks. Watch for the 847 area code and the id is usually payphone. If he doesn't have a calling card he can buy one at the NEX or you can mail him one...make sure you activate it first.

He called about an hour ago! Make sure you answer the phone if you don't recognize it! He is stuck at MEPS in New Orleans. There is 8 of them. There were no direct flights today to Chicago! I so want to get in my car and drive the 3 1/2 hours and spend tonight with him. But oh well.
Oh you poor thing!! Just cry. I know I'm going to cry. I used to cry when we took the 4-H steers and pigs to slaughter!!! They would stand in the pen and moo as we drove off..I would cry all the way home. Lol....So I know I'm going to cry when I leave my angel baby to the Navy...
