My son graduates from Boot on 1/21/11 in Great Lakes, IL and I don't know how many days to book my hotel & flight.  I heard all Nukes are Grad N Go and I need some help!

Hi there. No, all Nuke's aren't Grad and Go. My son had his PIR (Pass in Review) on Nov. 5 but did not leave for South Carolina and Nuke school until the following Wed. From what we were told at the time, it was because his division, and their brother division were both PUSH divisions, meaning they pushed them through a little quicker than the norm, but they then had to hold them back a few days after they graduated. you won't know what the situation for your son's division is until he gets there and somehow contacts you and lets you know. I know most of the other divisions who PIR'd at the same time left for South Carolina earlier than my son did, but they all started classes last Monday at the same time.
We flew into Milwaukee (I highly recommend this if you are flying) which was a wonderful airport, very easy to get in and out of, and the drive was only about 40 minutes down to Great Lakes. We stayed Thursday night thru Sunday, then returned home to Phoenix on Sunday.
I would suggest that you go on the Nuke moms discussion and directly ask others what their experiences were as I know some were Grad and Go, it's just that you can't always count on that. You could maybe just make your plans to be there thru Sunday and then if he is Grad and Go that would give you a chance to meet him at the airport to give him his cell phone and laptop, if he has one, then you could have a little time to sightsee in Chicago. Or it will give you time with him over the weekend if he isn't Grad and Go.
I sure hope this helps a little.
Oh of course I failed to mention sorry he grad. bootcamp 1-15-10 but he was grad and go.........
Hi as for our experience my ET sailor was grad and go.had to be at OHARA airport at 4 am Saturday morning to fly out to Charleston Sc.he did know he was one who had to go quick.hopefully your sailor will inform you a couple of weeks before graduation by letter or phone call as my sailor did.we had already booked flight and Navy Lodge in advance and didnt change anything even after we found out we wouldnt be able to spend much time with our sailor. I wont you to know we were very sad parents not being able to spend the weekend with our sailor.he will be able to spend the rest of Friday with you but my sailor had to be back on base at 8 oclock.you can meet them at the airport whilr they wait on there flight, you can gert a pass to stay with your sailor before he gets on plane you will just have to be screened. I hope you can spend at least the weekend with your sailor unlike we couldnt do it was depressing.good luck to you and your sailor ............
My son was also NOT a Grad 'n Go. If you click on "View all" under the list of discussions and on about 3 pages back there is another discussion on same subject and about 22 answers, maybe some answers there? Last posting Sept 2010 so should be very current.
My son's a nuke and had about a dozen others in his div, which PIR'ed this past week (11/24/10). He doesn't leave for Goose Creek until 12/1, a week after grad. I'm learning that the best course of action with the Navy is to stay flexible on travel plans - things change with pretty short notice.
My son is also NOT grad and go. His PIR is 12/22 and has 12 days of leave before nuke school on 1-3-2011. I agree - you gotta be flexible.
Yes, my son PIR'd on Nov. 5 and we had to have him back on base every night. He said their actual curfew was 9:00, but as a division they decided that everyone woudl be back by 7:30 in order to avoid anyone being late, or any unforseen situations that might cause someone to be late, plus they had some things they needed to take care of at night. in the mornings we would pick him up somewhere around 8 or 9, depending on if he had watch or not. He did have watch one morning so wasn't out until about 9:15.
Also, my son did not mention this to us, but I guess you can go on base to the NEX on Saturday or Sunday morning and watch their divisions march in formation up to the church, which I heard was a nice site to see. A lot of people also went to church with their sailors on Sunday morning, right there on base. My son never mentioned this. We prearranged to pick him up at the curb outside of the gate, as to avoid all of the congestion inside. It was neet to see all the sailors lined up out at the curb, with their neck scarf/face mask pulled up. They actually looked like bank robbers, ha.
I meant neat, not neet. :)
No, not all are grad & go...mine has PIR this friday 12/3/10 and he is grad & go, they are taking him to airport around 4am on Saturday, but we still don't know what time his flight will be. We will meet him at airport around the time he gets there, give him his cell phone and whatever else he wants. We'll spend the day with him at the airport until his flight leaves. I have heard of Nukes leaving the day after PIR, 2 days after, even up to a week after, so you won't know until your recruit tells you. Mine knew about 3 weeks ago that he was G&G for the day following PIR. So you should know in enough time to make your plans accordingly. He does not get his flight info until 12/1, so we will find out at PIR what time his flight leaves.
HYou were fortunate to find out in advance that your recruit is Grad & Go? We spoke with our Nuke (ship 03, div 17) on Thanksgiving and at that point did not have any info.
Thanks everyone!! I guess we'll have to wait to hear from him. I know his A school is supposed to start in January and his PIR date is 1/21 so that makes me wonder if he will leave right away. It's almost been 2 weeks since he left for Boot Camp. I can't wait to get that first real phone call!
Hang in there. I know it's tough now, but eventually it will be over and you will look back and wonder how it went so fast. AS with most things in life right?
