OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Graduation?
How many of you plan on or have gone to graduation? It is a long distance for us , my husband has not flown since he was a teenager and I'm not sure I could get him on a plane anyway! We are from a small town so city traffic seems intimidating to me though my husband is a truck driver. (He HATES traffic,too) Our son doesn't go to boot camp until Feb 23 ( his 21st birthday!) but I am trying to work this whole thing out in my head. I have look at airfare/hotel/car pkgs and about choked!

Please try to go to PIR you and your husband will never forget it. If you can't go then tell your son to order the DVD when he orders pictures at boot camp.

when my son graduated from bootcamp he got his pictures the same day but he got the DVD mailed to him. I guess since its recorded that day it takes some time.

On dvd and photos.
PIR - DVD, PHOTOS and BOUND ALBUM
Stay in touch with your recruit during BC about ordering the dvd and photos. He/she will have an opportunity to order these before PIR. If he/she forgets, you can go to the EXCHANGE and order them yourself when you are there for PIR. Additionally, you can call and get an order form faxed to you at anytime. Will need PIR date and Div number to order. NO email requests. BTW, there is a bound photo album that is beautiful – don’t know the cost.

His A school is supposed to be here in TX (San Antonio) so that would be a more likely trip, only 5 or 6 hours from here. I I really want to go to his PIR but just don't see how.Plus I forgot my husband doesn't get his vacation time until June.My son is very understanding and I'm sure he'll be ok with it . We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Honestly, do what you can do get there. You will not regret being there and they are so unbelieveably happy to have family around after the long, hard bootcamp! Please please PLEASE go! You won't regret it! Look now at trains, driving, whatever you can! I totally understand the hardship but sitting home that day you will feel like you should be there!

I just posted below but I can't stress enough that you should go if you can make it! Please try to work it out. Even if only one of you goes... your Sailor will be sooooo happy to have family there! And if you go, make sure you get to the base early when picking him up because the Sailors march in formation down the base before they are released to the family for the day! (I hate to add this emotional tug to the moment, but I had the hardest time watching the kids walk away that didn't have family there. We took my son's friend with us for reason but it kills you as a Mom to see the others without family.) It's like a parade! Lots of family members there and we all looked like we just woke up because it was early AND cold! My son was in Div 852, SO, and I heard people talking around me saying how impressed they were with that group and I was just the proud Mom standing there waiting for him to come over to me. Please PLEASE use a credit card, just go!

Oh Im so glad you're going! Make sure you get there early on their days after Grad bec that's when you see them march, and just watching them cross the street is a production for stopping traffic, and hearing the cadence!!! Have a great time! Just be real careful to respect the time they have to be back. They absolutely, positively CANNOT be late getting back to the base, but also back into their rack and ready for muster! So get back to base early bec there is a huge traffic line. Jake just walked in bec of the line.One boy got there SECONDS before the time (9:00pm I think) and the other sailors literally stripped him and put him in his correct uniform! It was a funny story but the soldiers were mad at that boy for almost making them lose their leave! Also, they are not allowed to have their cellphones at all the entire weekend! One sailor was handed his by his mom and Chief saw it and the sailor was brought up to Captain's Mast and his leave was taken away and he was moved back 2 wks for that! Cell phones are a big NO-NO! Unless he's in the hotel only!

My daughter graduated from Officer Candidate School (OCS) last June, in Rhode Island. We live in Colorado. I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Just like BC, it's a once in a lifetime achievement. Truly. They may marry more than once, but they will never become a US Navy Sailor a second time. If you can possibly go, I suggest that you do. I'm still paying for my trip, but am eternally grateful that I went.

pgrlisa - would you be able to give me some details regarding graduation. My son graduates OCS in May. I've just heard via the grapevine (facebook) that there is a limit on the number of people that can attend the graduation. My son has grandparents (in their 80's) that are planning on surprising him graduation day. Someone is driving them so- we are definitely over the 4 limit that someone mentioned on face-book. Can anyone confirm this or tell me where to go to find out.

OCS is different than Pass In Review (Boot Camp Graduation) for enlisted sailors. There was NO limit on the number of guests for OCS when my son graduated in '07. There were candidates with 9-10 guests. It could be different now. Be sure to attend the "Hi Moms" casual dinner normally given on Friday night. If you haven't join the OCS Graduate Moms group. My son graduated March 18th. Enjoy!
There is a limit of four people for PIR. The form letter and PIR Family Guide, clearly define the limit of four people per recruit at PIR. However, while I don't know how they did it, I saw families of more than four.
When I thought we could have more than four attend, I was thinking that maybe the recruit could work with ship mates to acquire the extra seats. Another recruit would add your family members to their list. It would take some coordination, but may be possible.
