I am not a Japan mom, but a soon to be Japan girlfriend.  My boyfriend was in Pensacola for Rescue Swimmer School.  He DORed and is now heading to Japan in about a month.  We are going in completely blind and know absolutely nothing, so I was wondering if anyone could offer us some sort of advice...anything would be appreciated.

Thanks!

What is his rank? Where is he headed in Japan? How long are his orders for? Are you planning on moving there? We can advice you better if you tell us that much.

The biggest question is about phones:
Tell him to get Skype set up on his computer and get a good pair of headphones. He can skype to skype for free and skype to any U.S. landline for $3.00 a month (check skype for current rates). He will pick out the cell phone plan that he likes when he gets there. He will get advice from others there.

He literally just found this out a few hours ago, so we don't have a lot of answers.

He is going to be fueling jets, but I am not sure what rate that is.  His orders are for two years. And I won't be able to more there right now.

I am curious about travel over there to visit though?

Skye is that best. Besides talking  you can see him too.

HI

we just visited our daughter there, we had a blast! what do you want to know? you need a passport, we bought JR train tickets here in the states (cheaper). everything is by train. and you walk alot! which base is he going too?

he is going to Yokosuka.

Just wanted to know what it is like. Does your daughter like being stationed there? how do you communicate with her?  are things more expensive there? what about sending mail, how long does it take for her to receive something? what are her living arrangements on base?

any information you could provide would be great. we are going in completely blind.

Oh your advice has been very helpful because we are kind of in the same boat!

What is your husbands rank? And what does it mean to go underway? Can your husband text on that cell phone too or is it strictly for calling? How long will he be there?

Also, what does it mean that he can get leave whenever he wants?

That is so awesome you will be going to see him soon! I am jealous :)

The ships sometimes go out for short periods (a few days to a few weeks).  This can happen at short notice (24/48 hours).  These are "underways", not a full deployment, which is several months long.

While sailors earn 30 days of leave each year, their ships normally can't give them the time all at once. So if they are only using a week or two and not traveling back to the US, they can get their leave approved easily. During times when everyone wants leave, such as holidays, the more senior/higher ranking sailors usually get first pick of leave dates.

Ok. So I should not expect to have him home for christmas?

And certaintly not any time before that?

Thank you for your help and answers!

Leave is usually once a year. Between 15-30 days. Depends what rank he is. My son is in seasabo japan. Bad thing is it takes so long to get home. Its a plan to tokyo. than tokyo to chicago and than to florida.

My son will be in Seasabo, Japan too -- on the USS Germantown. He leaves next Sun. - 9/11. Please tell me more about it!

My son is in Yokosuka they have an app he texts me with that he has a local number on which is GREAT because it gets expensive texting international. They can take leave in their country at anytime my son has been there since 9/10 he says he wont get a chance to come home until at least 12/11. Im hoping we get to see him sooner. But hearing from him daily or just about daily is good.
