When a new sailor recieves orders to his first duty station does someone tell them what to do next or who they go should see about.. moving/leave etc or are they on there own to find out? My son seems to be getting no info (at least that's what he tells me) when I ask. He's doing everything himself with no Navy instruction. It seems strange to me.

Wow...that is weird. My understanding (from years and years ago) is that they hand you your orders and an HUGE packet of documents which you need to guard with your life. But that also when you get that packet personnel brings you in and goes thru everything too. He's in A-school isn't he?
Yes, he's going to Ga from Pensacola but wants to come home first. This has been crazy. He told me he was leaving today. Well, yestderday he finds out that the office you have your stuff shipped from is closed on thursday so what does he do...runs to the ups store with his sea bags boxes etc and ships them HOME. Then said he was going to ride his motorcycle to ga (8hrs trip)and get a flight home from there tonight OMG . But as of 6 last night he had no set plans, no plane info, nothing exepect he was for sure leave this AM. Nobody had heard from him today. I am so worried that he's done something wrong and has gotten in trouble. I have been carrying all of my phone withme today so in case he calls.
As Sandi said previously you get your orders and all your records to take to your 1st duty station. He should also have someone that meets him when he arrives at the airport or on base from his new command to help him check-in and show him around a bit. At, least that's what happened when I went to my first duty station after school. Good luck. He could speak to one of his school instructors they can help alot. Linda D.-ia
Your son should have a sponsor that has been assigned to direct his every move. Wherever you son is reporting to, they have indoctrination programs for new incoming Sailors to that area, and each new Sailor has a sponsor that is someone that has been there awhile and knows the routine of
traveling to the site, what to do once they are there and where they are supposed to go. My son had a sponsor before he left "C" school at Great Lakes that he talked with by phone that assisted
his every move until he reached his first duty station. Ask your son if he has been given a sponsor....if he says he hasn't, then contact the omsbudsman for the site where he is going to.....
do that by calling your local Navy office and ask them to help you locate the in-dock office for new
incoming. I hope that helps.
{p.s.-- the base in GA should have someone there that knows he is to report--I found out the omsbudsman phone number for my son's duty station by typing in "omsbudsman" at the search bar on the top of this page--the person that I called wasn't over my son's area, but they were able to give me numbers to the people I needed to call to help get info--it doesn't hurt to make a few phone calls.........good luck, Victoria}
I completely FORGOT about the sponsors. Victoria's correct and it doesn't matter if you are a new recruit reporting to their first duty station or if you've got 20 years in, there are always sponsors assigned to you.

CTMom of 3 I will keep you and your son in my thoughts and I hope once you've heard from your son you will let us know! (What is his rate in the CT field?) My son is also in the CT family.
Oh really,he's a CTR. What is your son and where is he stationed?
Casey will be a CTM and head to school there after he graduates Aug. 8.
The same thing is happening with my husband. Not only did they not help they confused him more!
They gave Jason a plane ticket to his base, but since he had leave he rerouted it that day so he could come home. He shipped everything home. He said that he would get reimbursed for moving expenses, so he needed to keep all reciepts. (I'm not sure he ever followed up on that !) Jason never heard from his sponser, so he finially contacted the base a few days before he was to report. Good thing he did, since they didn't know he was coming: paperwork error. It all got cleared up and his sponser met him when he arrived.
