OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Going to Washington...maybe...
Hi,
My fiance is an ET, and a couple months away from finishing Prototype. We're hoping to get stationed in Washington and I can finish my degree at Washington University. Can someone please tell me anything about the area? I am really interested to know about transportation. I know there is a ferry, but do they have shuttle buses or would I want to take my car to school every day? What is the weather like? Do you get huge blizzards in the winter? I'm from Oklahoma so the west coast will be really new to me.

Yes, he's a nuke. He's going to a sub, I just forget that there are carriers up there cause all he talks about is subs, lol. But that helps, thanks!

My nephew is a nuke, subs, who graduated with exceptionally high marks, was practically promised Hawaii or San Diego. He did not get anything near what was on his dream sheet. Ended up homeported out of Groton.
Being prior Navy, I knew exactly what those "promises" meant. And that's what he got.
I know that's being pessimistic, but hey, I've had "that" conversation with my detailer, "So, Petty Officer, do you prefer Diego Garcia, Diego Garcia, or let me see, we have one other open billet, ah, Diego Garcia?"

Haha, yeah I know we've already had some of that. But the other places he can go I feel like the transportation and weather aren't such big unknowns. I am spending the next few weeks applying to school all over the nation. Blah!

See my post in the Washington/Oregon group section. It's an overall idea of what to expect weather wise here in the Pacific Northwest. You mentioned Washington University. Do you mean University of Washington (UW) or Washington State University (WSU)? The UW has a campus in Tacoma which is was closer to Bremerton than the Seattle campus. WSU is in Pullman in Eastern Washington, on the WA/Idaho boarder. I don't know what kind of sattelite campuses they have.
Washington is not a prime location for blizzards, but when we do get snow/ice storms just about everything shuts down. Our terrain here is filled with A LOT of hills...not a good combo with ice and snow.
If you do get stationed here, dress in layers, always be prepared for rain, and invest in a good pair of waterproof boots and wool socks! Good luck and welcome to the best area in the nation as far as I'm concerned!

Thanks, yeah I meant UW. If we get washington we'll probably be on a sub and I think that Bangor, so Seattle will be the closest.
Ok, ice I can deal with we see ice in Oklahoma all the time. Could you send me a link to that? I can't seem to find it

Bangor is located on the Key Pennisula across the water from Tacoma, WA. The UW Tacoma campus would be the shortest commute and less hassle travel wise for you. You would be able to drive over the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge rather than taking the ferry everyday. There is a toll for the bridge, but it's much less than the ferry.

Say your prayers and keep your fingers crossed that he gets stationed in Washington, but I wouldn't count on it. My son is a nuke EM, graduated power school with distinction, was one of the first one done with prototype in his group, and a sub volunteer from boot camp. He did not get any of the choices he listed on his "dream sheet". He is stationed in Groton on a fast attack sub. Keep in mind the phrase "needs of the Navy".
